A31 Lockup Problem

#1 Post by randallreynolds » Mon Aug 14, 2006 8:54 pm

Hi I searched the forum and couldn't find anything on this. After going on vacation (bumpy car), whenever I bump my laptop a certain way, it crashes. The whole machine just locks up. I think it's a hardware problem, like something loose in the machine. Anyone have any ideas?

I would check to see if the ram sticks have jogged loose. Reseat them and see if you still have the problem.

It looks like the ram is probably seated correctly, although I'll try to reseat it. Thanks. Are there any other possible causes of something like this?

Edit -- I'll repost if it crashes again, but I pressed the ram in a little to see if it would make any difference. It seems like this is probably the problem though.

Worst case: The systemboard might have flexed, causing the system to freeze.

Generally though, the memory just has to move a tad to cause some huge headaches.

Hey I'm still having lockup issues with my A31. I reseated the memory but that didn't help. Also I've noticed a new symptom happening over the past few days. On boot, the display doesn't show anything. It looks like the machine isn't turned on but you can hear it go through a POST sequence. This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens once in awhile.

Edit-- Here's something else I just noticed. If I have one slot (A) with memory seated in it and a second slot (B) with no memory in it, I have no lockups at all. If I reverse that and Have (B) with the memory in it and (A) without the memory in it, the display doesn't even show up.

Edit2-- It's a bad DIMM unit.

After trying tons of DIMM combinations, I found that it isn't a memory problem. It still locks up all the time.

Lockups

After looking over you post, it looks like we have similar problems. I don't know if you saw my post from a few days ago, but I've been having freeze-up problems with my wife's "new" A31 ever since I loaded it. It seemed to run fine during the OS load, but immediately afte that, it started locking up constantly.

I tried different combinations of RAM/No RAM and it seemed to work well with 1 stick. I also was able to get it to run with the sticks swapped, but it's been locking up again almost as soon as I finished the swap.

Now I'm just scratching my head.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Howdy.
I have an A31 1.6. that I got cheap on Ebay. Fortunately, as it locks up when it's moved around or even when typed on, etc. It runs great driving an external monitor and wireless kboard.
However, it's never frozen when in bios system tests or when running dos based testing software. I can turn it over or tap it on the keyboard and it continues to run. I've read discussions of similar problems on T4x and R series indicating similar symptoms resultiing from flexing of the planar board often coupled with error messages concerning the video driver and BSOD's. Discussions implicate the video chip coming loose from the motherboard. Repair would require a new motherboard or resoldering the chip. The A31 uses a similar configuration for the motherboard. Perhaps this is the issue. Maybe the ram problems are reflecting flexing problems.
