Problem upgrading memory in A22e

#1 Post by ludacris » Tue Aug 15, 2006 11:04 pm

Hi everyone, i have IBM thinkpad A22e pentium version with currently 192 mb memory (128mb (4 chips on each side) and 64 mb). I just bought 256mb pc-100 memory in ebay and it has label 'IBM approval', it also has 16 chips (Samsung chip) on each side . So, i remove the 64mb and put the 256 mb in the 128mb slot and move the 128mb to the 64mb slot. The computer can boot normally, and i see in the BIOS the memory has been 384mb but after the windows screen (I'm using windows 2000 sp4) the blue screen appears it says like "if this is the first time you see this screen, then restart you computer..." and so on. I've tried to reinstall my windows but that similiar blue screen appears after the windows analyze my hard disk(thus, i cant reinstall my windows).
Then, i try to boot with knoppix (Linux live on cd), and it went well except that after like 5 or 10 minutes running knoppix, my computer hangs, i dont know if it is related with the memory, next time i'll boot knoppix with my old memory and see how it goes.
Do you think it has something to do with memory compatibility? Or this memory is not windows-compatible? Could this memory be defective? Please i need your suggestions so i can refund this memory if necessary.
Thanks

All the best,

I had an A22e (2655 A7U) with Windows 2000 that had two 256Mb modules in it (total 512Mb) and it worked fine with all Windows 2000 service packs up to SP4. Your issue could be compatability (I don't know), but it should work up to 512Mb. ... JD Hurst

here is a list of ram fru numbers that work with the a22e

64-MB SDRAM SO DIMM fru: 20L0264
128-MB SDRAM SO DIMM fru: 20L0265

The memory is defective

#5 Post by ludacris » Mon Aug 21, 2006 2:26 pm

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your responses, after i've done the test with memtest86 (thanks aaron158), i got bunch of errors withe the memory. I think i can safely say now that the memory is defective since the memory FRU is 33L3070. Also, when i tried the new memory by itself in my laptop, the computer wont boot at all, even the big ibm logo didnt appear.

Thank you again for your help guys, i really appreciate it
