R60e is it worth a try :) ?

#1 Post by xbytes » Sat Sep 02, 2006 12:49 pm

Thinking about upgrading from my T30 to an R60e as it is in the right price range, can't quite stretch to the R60 or T60, but the only real disadvantage I can see between the R60E and the R60 is the R60 has a better GPU can't find any reviews of the R60E though!

Should I go ahead and get an R60E its £480 could afford £560!

what would you do in my situation! ':?'

I am absolutely certain that you would be very happy with an R60E.

Just before the R60 models were available I needed to purchase a laptop for my son for college. I wanted to save some money and also take into consideration that he tends to be hard on things. I even had some concern over losing it. So I found the least expensive ThinkPad which at the time was an R51e. 1.5GHz Celeron processor, 14"XGA, 256mb (which I upgraded with an additional 512mb) for a mere $625 USD. Build quality is every bit as good as my other ThinkPads. The ABS material the case is made from is very sturdy, has a nice finish and is quite ridgid. After years of using top of the line ThinkPads (see the list below) I'm super impressed with the R series.

After loading office and some other apps he needed for school I used if for a couple of days. I'm here to tell you that I was truly shocked at just how good that computer is. Mind you, I'm used to my T60 which is 2GHz w/ 2GB ram, 7200rpm 100GB hard drive SXGA+ 15" flexview. The speed of the R51e is relatively quick especially considering it has a 4200rpm hard drive. I have used other laptops with 4200rpm drives and they are quite slow compared to this one.

So, as far as the R60e is concerned, it has a 5400 HD, plus the R60 has faster memory and front side bus. It has the touch pad as well as the track point. Overall I'm sure you would be pleasantly surprised at how nice an R60e is.

Hope this helps.... Cheers.... :D

Which model R60e were you looking at?

P.S. I hope that those prices aren't educational or employee prices, since posting them would be against the forum rules.

cheers for the reply archer! seems like a pretty decent system I think it only has one speaker though a bit cheeky of IBM to remove one, maybe I could solder another one on hehe, apart from that I don't think I need 1394 on board and I'm happy with the Radeon in my T30 so as long as the GMA 950 is as good as that then I don't mind.

Seems like a pretty good deal for a Core Duo machine + SATA USB 2 etc getting annoyed with my PCMCIA USB 2 card bloody power surges.

and as for the price and model its a UQ13LUK and the item is a return to a retailer without software so its as new just no discs with it.

don't nuke me ':)',

The price is retail from an online reseller. Rest assured I know the policies here....

Archer: I was referring to the OP. I see that you and I posted our messages at the same time (1:18pm).

To the OP, no, we aren't going to nuke you. I just wanted to make sure that they weren't EPP or Edicational prices.

Would selling your current T30 help jump to the one that you really want. It just seems that you are looking for some kind of justification for getting the R60e. I'd be concerned about the fact that it was returned...and missing parts. Is the warranty still valid?

You will be happy with the GMA 950, compared to my T30 there is a drastic difference. However I would be very wary of a returned computer. There is simply too many issues and chances of a problem. For price comparison, here is a link to an online reseller, Euclid Computers, which will sell and ship to you. I have used them for several of my ThinkPad purchases. They are very trustworthy, they only sell new in the sealed box, and they are Lenovo authorized. They have good discounted prices and are very good about communications. I don't work for them, just a satisfied customer.

Yeah it has a 90 day warranty its from a well established retailer also, all they said about it was it has been opened and the software is gone! I have looked at Euclid and seems a good supplier also.

The R60e is now on sale at IBM's site for $678 here:

Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.
