Gah! Keyboard scratches Display?

#1 Post by doppelfish » Thu Aug 19, 2004 1:30 pm

Hi,

I just realized that the scratches on my A30p's display coincide neatly
with the pattern of the keyboard. I've now resorted to putting a thin
plastic sheet onto the keyboard before I flip the laptop closed.

Does anyone else see this effect, or am I the only one?

cheers,
-fish

There is certainly no harm in putting a thin sheet between screen and keyboard, but are you certain the screen is being scratched? There is less clearance with my T41 than any other laptop I have owned, and if I press the lid down a bit too firmly, the high points of the keys leave marks (grease marks) on the screen.

Two things:
1. I have learned to put the PC in my bag with an orientation that reduces pressure. I don't get the marks much any more now that I know what happens.
2. With Windex and a very soft cloth (not paper towels for example) gently but firmly clean the screen. The marks will come off.

If the marks are truly scratches, I don't see how placing the screen straight down on a key could do this. Scratches come from lateral motion and there isn't any in this case.

Good luck, ... JDHurst

Hi JDHurst,

You might want to rethink using Windex. Over time, it will cause your LCD to yellow and become dull. I have used standard 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol on my LCD screens for years with no problems.

Hope this helps!

OK, a sturdy laptop bag is certainly no wrong thing to have.

they are, I'm afraid. With my soft-shell laptop bag, the laptop is probably squeezed enough for there to be both lateral motion between cover and case, and not enough space between display screen and keys. Maybe I was relying too much on the sturdyness that is commonly attributed to ThinkPads.
I'll be following your advice of putting a thin sheet between screen and keyboard (thanks!).

pctech - I stopped using Windex. The machine is new(ish) and I don't think I have damaged it. I used a dilute solution of ispropyl alchohol and clean water and wetted a soft cloth with it. The sceen cleaned up very nicely. I don't ever touch my screen and I don't have to clean it often.

Thank you. ... JDHurst

Hi JDHurst,

Glad I could help! I don't think you caused any damage since it sounds like a fairly new machine. The damage occurs over a longer period of time.

Thanks JHEM, glad to be back on the forum. I hope to have the time to participate more frequently now.
