z60M - Can I make these changes?

#1 Post by Darkus » Mon Sep 04, 2006 3:38 am

I was wondering, recently purchased a z60M - 2529ETG from a German retailer, and has following specs:

1.5Ghz Centrino
512mb RAM
Intel 900 Shared
80GB SATA HD

I want to change that Centrino to a Pentium M. Is this possible?

(Knowing that my Centrino is a 400mhz FSB and the Pentium M I want is a 400mhz also but clocked at 1.7Ghz) and is this even possible to do regarding opening the laptop itself, I'm an experienced computer user.

Thank you.

I know that the t60's and z61's seat the core duo CPU's in PGA (removable) sockets, but I'm not certain about the z60's.

If you can find a spec sheet for your system, and it has the same chipset as the pentium-m equipped z60's, you should be able to swap it out without changing a thing. (though it may void your warranty..)
You should also compare voltage requirements before swapping ..

Centrino is a platofrm of Intel wirelss, Pentium m and the intel board, so Im assuming that you have the Celeron M 1.5. Yes its possible to switch to a Banias 1.7, I doubt youll get a noticble performace increase but battery life will improove.

As for opening up the thinkpad, go to the Lenovo site and search for your system number. Than find the documentation on your TP and it will show you how to take it apart,

Personally I do not see a problem. But then again, I am not an expert on this. See Item 20 (CPU assembly) in the following parts list.

Assuming that the socket is the same size, and that the mother board will accept different chips than the one in there now, you could put any chip you wanted in there.

Again, if they're the same socket and the mobo will accept it. It'd be one pain in the butt to take the entire thing apart just for that though.

Well I've checked specs, and the FSB and Sockets match for a Pentium M 1.7GHZ Dothan.

Can't seem to find motherboard specifications for further verifications though.

And I don't mind warranty, I take good care of my laptops. If it's possible I might even have it done by professionals :)

Don't know about the Z series, did it with the A31p that I had (went from 2 Ghz to 2.6 Ghz) and it was not hard at all and would do it again but not to the 2.6 - too much heat, a 2.4 would be better in there.

However do check the fan assembly - the 1.8 Ghz A31 and the 2 Ghz A31p had different fan assemblies mainly to cope with the extra heat. I also used Arctic Silver 5 which helps another few degrees according to the experts.

An interesting thread... is it possible to upgrade from a Pentium M to a Core Duo? Did they use the same CPU socket?
