A Few Questions Before I Buy Z61t

#1 Post by Cath » Mon Sep 04, 2006 6:35 am

I'm about to buy a 14.1 inch Z61t but have just a few questions that came up as I did a configuration. I'm hoping there are some up here who can answer them. (I chose the Z61t because it is one of the few that has s-video and firewire, widescreen and is still fairly light at around 5 lbs.)

1. Is bluetooth standard? I could not find anywhere that the 14.1 inch Z61t has bluetooth. If it's not standard, then how do I get it? There's no place that offers it for the Z61t.

2. If I get it with the Verizon antenna am I obligated to activate it and start paying monthly? Or can I just have it and activate it when I'm ready to?

3. I saw that there is an option to get an "asset tag" for $12.00 that has my company name, model #, etc. Where exactly does Lenovo attach this asset tag?

4. Passwords - is there a way to disable or not have the Thinkpad ask for a password at power-on and for the hard drive. I've heard that there is a feature on the Thinkpad for both of these things, but I'd rather turn them off and just have my computer boot up.

5. Finally, and this is the most confusing of all. In the configuration, it shows that the Z61t comes with an "Integrated WiFi Wireless LAN Adapter" and says it's the "Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Mini-PCI Express Adapter" and the box is checked next to it. THEN, in the next option "Wireless LAN Accessories" it asks whether or not I want to pay $69 and choose the exact same thing "Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Mini-PCI Express Adapter." I do not understand this - am I missing something or do they just have it in here twice.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Getting a Thinkpad is a huge change for me, especially 14.1 inches after using an ultraportable with a 10.6 inch screen. Interestingly though, they both weigh the same. I think my eyes are now going to be happier with a little larger of a screen. I know I'm going to love the keyboard and that's real important for me because I do a lot of writing. Anyhow, we'll see.

Thanks - Cath

1. BT is standard with certain features/models - I thought when I was configuring a Z60m, I had to choose the 2.0GHz Pentium M, and then it had Bluetooth. Check the tabook to see which Z61t's have Bluetooth:

2. I believe that is just the hardware - you don't have to use it or activate it.

3. No idea

4. You can disable any and all password protection

5. If they are identical, it sounds like a glitch. I've seen other weird glitches as well

I wouldn't use anything but a thinkpad - hopefully you'll like them as much as the rest of us do.
And the thinkpad keyboards are great.

Good - thank you. I was hoping it was on the bottom of the laptop but you just never know what they're going to do. Not much left to ask Lenovo since everyone answered most of my questions right here on the forum. Thanks to all!
