Since I am a web developer, this was not good.
I used the Restore Utility (which I think is great) to restore to factory settings.
This time, I changed the installation sequence to turn on IIS first and see what happened. This time I could get it to run, but when I tried to turn on a feature of it (Front Page Server Extensions) it froze up.
I used the Restore Utility again and got IIS and FPSE installed, but the system froze up trying to install Visual Studio.Net, the Microsoft IDE.
I couldn't turn off the laptop (it just wouldn't turn off), I had to switch users and then turn it off. As the laptop was shutting down, it put a message on the screen "Windows has become corrupted and is shutting down".
I have not turned the laptop on since. These are the highlights - there were other times when the laptop froze up and I had to remove the battery at one point to shut it down.
I called Lenovo and they said the hard drive might be bad or that Symantec might be interfering with the correct operation. They recommended doing a dry system test to check the hard drive and to remove Symantec from the laptop. (I had already run the system utility to check the hard drive and it showed as ok.)
Do these sound reasonable based on the symptoms? I can see Symantec interfering with web ports, but corrupting Windows?
I need a laptop and I don't want to waste any more time.
Thanks for any help
John
