hibernation/standby issue for R/T4x series- STILL UNRESOLVED

#1 Post by thinkpadlover07 » Fri Sep 08, 2006 4:04 am

I know there have already been posts about a strange hibernation/standby issue as follows..

coming out of standby/hibernation, the machine displays the windows desktop for ~20 seconds, then goes back into standby/hibernation. If you turn on the machine AGAIN, it comes out of standby/hib for good.

KEY QUIRK: If you remove the Ultrabay CD/DVD drive, standby/hibernation works the first time (like it should)!!

There have already been posts on this (from R and T-series owners), but no recent chatter...NO ONE ELSE IS HAVING THIS PROBLEM???

R4x: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... on+standby
T4x: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20252

I tried to fix this problem a few months ago by wasting a day uninstalling/reinstalling the following..
1. all of the Power Mgmt software (IBM Power Mgmt, Battery Maximiser, Power Mgmt driver (tried downgrading too, with newest BIOS)
2. BIOS
3. CD/DVD drive
4. everything under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager

I'm pretty sure that no other drivers/IBM software are causing this.

And I KNOW that a workaround is uninstalling the PM driver, but then the Fn+F3/F5/F12 functions are lost. So, it's really not.

Any ideas? I'm going to email Sam Palmisano about this, [censored] I'm [censored]. Hopefully he can kick around some of the engineers to get this old problem fixed by an updated driver. They're probably too busy writing new drivers for the buggy oh-Lenovo T60s. :?

If you agree with me and can't help, please e-mail Sam, CEO of IBM

Thanks,
Rob

Hi,

I don't think a note to Sam will fix anything... This is most probably a configuration or driver issue quite specific (not generic), so I doubt Sam can do anything except directing you to the proper thinkpad support channels..

And the support people will most probably direct you first to update to last level all of the software in your machine (OS, patches, Thinkvantage software - very easy with software installer btw, ...), to verify it's not something already fixed, and afterwards ask you to do some problem determination, such as testing that in safe mode, or reinstall the platform *fully* step by step to know what is causing this behavior...

In my case, I currently own a T40 and a T42 and none experience any problem with suspend/hibernate, but I remember having some wreid problems in the beginning (2-3 years ago), so it may be very well that just updating all the sw could cure the problem... don't forget the CD/DVD uint firmware thing!.

I LOVE BARCELONA!

Thanks for the reply, FTC. I've always used the Software Installer to install updates - I've tried downgrading to the various drivers I had BEFORE this problem started happening..but, strangely, that didn't work. It seems that updating some drivers causes irrevocable damage.

I've tried everything - updating all the software to the very latest (including the 'lowest' level firmware i.e. BIOS, intel chipset support, embedded controller, and yes! CD-RW/DVD drive firmware), but none of that has worked.

Short of reinstalling Windows (which I don't want to do, sorry - I'll take reimaging over reinstalling any day), I guess this problem will never be resolved.

Again, anyone else with this problem? let me know at least, so we can commiserate!

But this is a problem with your R40, right? There is already a post about this in the R, A, and G Thinkpad Forum.

Don't post the same message across multiple forums. If you have a general question, post it ONCE in the conference set aside for that purpose. Read the Rules of the Road.
