Remote control for infrared (IrDA)

#1 Post by mister_lake » Mon Sep 11, 2006 6:10 pm

Is there some kind of remote control or software or something that allows me to use the infrared port as a remote control?

I'd like to be able to control volume from a distance..

This thread covers the issue pretty well. I am still using my CyberLink Remote Control.

Under normal operation, I can see the red LED in the IR lens flashing intermittently. Is this any sort of security issue and can it be disabled?

Not sure of the security issues, but there are settings in Control Panel > Wireless Link.
Or you can disable it totally from the IBM ThinkPad Fast Infrared Port Properties (from the Wireless Link or Device Manager)
X21 (upgrade: 384MB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
T42 2378-DXU (upgrade: 1.5GB ram 60GB 7200rpm)
Z60m 2531-MTU (upgrade: 2GB ram)

I can't speak for all the recent models of ThinkPads, but one of the latest BIOS updates for my T42 allowed disabling the IR port in the BIOS, so that the OS doesn't even see it.

I noticed in Control Panel/ThinkPad Configuration you can disable the Infrared port along with most others.

That tool almost looks like a software BIOS front end, but might just be a windows configuration tool.

I guess there are many ways to turn it off :)
