Z60m overheating

#1 Post by belutz » Thu Sep 21, 2006 6:13 am

Hi all, I just joining this forum :)

I got a problem with my Z60m. It seems that my Z60m is always overheating (more than 90 C, max is 96 C that i've ever seen) and the system always shutdown itself after reaching that temperature.

If, I use power source optimize or thinkpad default power scheme this always happens. So I always use the Timers off power scheme to avoid this problem.

Is this normal? If it is, than I can't never use the system full power :(

I'm sorry about my English, I hope anyone has a solution for my problem.

Thanks

If you don't want to return your system, then open it up and see if the heatsink is properly mounted, making good contact with the CPU/GPU. Additionally apply new thermal grease (Arctic Silver 5) but clean throughly the components.

Hi,
thanks for replying.

Actually I've already come to IBM Repair Center in Jakarta, Indonesia. But the technician says, it's common for Z series to be overheating. And he also says because I rarely use my battery when I'm connected to AC power (?)

His answer doesn't make sense.

And I'm still don't have the courage to open the machine by myself :(

I was having similar problem with my Z61m. Oddly enough the problem suddenly stop away. In my first days with this laptop heat is a problem, especially when playing games.

But if i am not mistaken after that i update all drivers and bios. And suddenly i never have heat problem again. There is a heat but not as high as previous one before driver update.

I dont know if that 2 corelated (and you had probably have updated your drivers aswell), just want to share my opinion.

I live in Jakarta too. Hows the service center? Are they helpfull enough?

One thing that hold me from upgrade is that the upgrade pack is so big. Mine is more than 200 mb. It is not recommended for dial up connection.

Good for you then. I already update all drivers and bios. So right now I have to use NHC to prevent my Z60m from overheating.

The service center in Landmark Building are very helpfull, I'm glad I chose to buy an IBM laptop, becase their customer service are good :)

The guy must be joking. I haven't used a Z series laptop before, but I guess that with its large design there's more room the heat to be dissipated (comparing to a T4x series laptop)

What temps you've been getting that describe the overheating problem?

It gets extremely hot!
For example when I ran Picasa and it's searching for new pictures, the temp can get over 90 C and when it reachs 100 C the laptop automatically shutdown. It also the same when I search files using Search in Windows.

So with NHC I limit the max speed just until 1.33Ghz, and sometimes it still reach 90C but never reach 100C

:(

While the laptop is idle or just running winamp, the temp is between 50-57C is it normal? Considering we're in tropical country.

Thanks

Whoever that tech was, he wasn't on the straight and level regarding the Z Series and heat issues. They don't have a tendancy to overheat. Even in a more temperate/tropical ambient environ, it won't do that unless you are purposefully loading it with heavy loads for an extended period of time.

I can say that reaching the critical shutdown temperature for the CPU by merely searching is a *severe* problem. If it can't be resolved through a BIOS/EC update or a new fan, then you will probably have to get a new system board.

Ok, maybe I should bring my laptop back to the repair center.
I'll post the report again later.

I noticed in the summer that if my room went above 27 that my z60m didn't like it and got hot (as monitored via NHC, not physically). Kind of like it couldn't disapate the heat generated by 100% processor utilization at that ambient temperature.

Under normal room temperature it runs fine though.

overheating

I have a z60t which overheats when running a defrag, or when backing up or restoring, times when cpu & drive utilization is 100% for extended periods. To ease the problem I put something under the laptop to raise the front edge where the drive is located so that heat can dissapate better from better venilation. Under normal conditions, it runs pretty cool at avout 102F.
