Question about creating backup drive for Z60m

#1 Post by HowardL » Thu Sep 21, 2006 4:26 pm

I am about to buy the IBM HD SATA Bay Adapter and a 100gb Hitachi HTS 541010G9SA00 in order to create a backup drive for my 2531 MTU.

I generally know how to do this as I have done it with other computers using Acronis True Image.
My question is that under the "How to" section it refers to installing IBM firmware for the HDD. Is this something that I need to do for this particular model or can I simply format the drive and then clone it?

Thanks in advance

Umm...why not use the free Rescue and Recovery program from Lenovo, that can back up the whole image to a second drive, or, if you want to save some money, a USB hard drive...or the system hard drive, or a network share.....

Plus, it does a whole lot more...very nice...

I like acronis too.
I have it on a usb flash stick. I can just boot to that and then backup right from a drive in the hdd adapter - though I only have my old pata hdd adapter at the moment, which is fine since I have a bunch of extra harddrives, and none of them are sata anyway (I did order a sata hdd adapter, but am still fighting for that from the [censored] ebay seller. I think he's trying to screw me because my winning bid was only $8 .... ;) )

Thanks for replies but I already use Acronis and it makes a very good bootable HDD.

My question is about buying a new Hitachi HDD to make the backup. Can I just go out and buy the same Hitachi drive from anyone or does it have to have certain IBM firmware before I can make a clone of my current HDD?

I thought somewhere in the "Want to clone your hard drive for a backup..?" section it mentioned needing some IBM firmware. That's all I need to know.
Thanks

I've read about that too - the 2010 error?

I don't think that affects us. I copied this from a thread about that 2010 error.
christopher_wolf wrote:The models it can appear on include the T43, R52 as it uses the same planar/motherboard that the T43 does, and the X41 since it uses a SATA-PATA bridge with a SATA controller and a PATA HDD along with the same special IBM/Lenovo firmware.
