Thinkpad G41. Impressions. nVidia Graphics?

#1 Post by agarza » Thu Sep 28, 2006 12:27 am

Hi.
I was browsing NotebookForums.com and found a thread with some pictures of a G41.

I wonder if any of you in the forum actually owns one.
I've seen in eBay an auction for a refurbished G41:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... Track=true

It states that it has 128MB nVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 graphic card

I thought IBM lappies do not feature nVidia Chips, Am I Wrong.

the laptop in the link above has a P4-M 548 3.33GHz. It sounds to me like that processor might easily outpace a Dothan.

Can somebody tell me if that processor running @ 3.33GHz could process (let's say video encoding) faster than a "Dothan" 1.8GHz running on a 400FSB.

If somebody here actually owns one G41, could you tell your experience with the laptop.
What about fan & heat issues?

Although I dont own one, I know someone that does and that thing is HUGE. It looks bigger in real life, and yes it does have a 5200, but Id say thats on the level or a little better than the intel 900.

And dont look at the actual CPU clock speed, there are other things to consider and that 3.33 might be on the level of the P-M 2.0-2.13.

That box will blow the doors off a 1.8Ghz when it comes to raw processing power. The downside to the Nvidia models was that the daughter card took up the space required for the internal floppy drive, but they were very robust and reliable. Its the next best thing to having a desktop IMHO.

WoW.
It surely is a best on raw processing power. Did it overheat too much?

The T4x series look more stylish than the G41, but would be cool to own one of those. Wonder how that thing is from the inside.
I've an obsession opening up things :P

I've done an unscientific test. Both machines were idle.

Lenovo Thinkpad T43 / 1.86Ghz Dothan / 2GB / 100GB 7200 rpm

(vs)

HP ProLiant DL360 G4 / dual 3.4GHz Xeon / 4GB / 2x 146GB 10k U320 SCSI RAID

Both ran Super Pi to 1M digits in 41 seconds for three trials. It's very unscientific. Either machine is faster than the 2.8Ghz P4 i have at work.

I bought a G41 about 11/2 years ago. Yes it is big but it is also powerful. My sons play video games together over the network. It keeps up and actually sometimes outperforms my HP desktop with an Athlon 3400 proccesser.

AFAIK, G series only have a mono speaker. Though the output from headphone port is stereo.
