Cant connect to network

#1 Post by ANDS » Fri Sep 29, 2006 7:37 pm

Welp - tried everything I could think of:

Uninstalled all software not related to Thinkvantage.
Tripe-checked WEP key.
Used both WINDOWS and THINKVANTAGE to try and connect.

The result is the same. . .a nice Red X on "Waiting for IP Configuration".

When I got this thing, I went to school first and was able to connect - no problem. However, here, at home - I'm not getting jack. I am typing this on my X31 right now, and it has had no problem in ever connecting to my router, but I do know when I first got this, I had to do a lot of hoop jumping to get things going.

I dont know what the problem is, and a Google search doesnt turn up a whole lot. Im really frustrated at this point, since this sucker is meant to be fool-proof right? Turn it on, aquire WAP, blaze across the internets. So far, it hasnt happened.

Any help would be appreciated.

So, if you use Windows to configure the adapter...what step does it get to? If it gets to "attempting to get IP address" and stalls, it's not the laptop's fault, but the router or access point's.

I was using ThinkVantage Access Connections, since it seemed slicker. I know. Anyway, I went into my routers lil mini-website (its a D-Link, it sucks for being anywhere but 10 feet from router but whatre ya gonna do) and noticed it had a ton of info I was missing from ThinkVantage.

So, I went into Edit Wireless Connection, and put in the IP Address, and Default Gateway and Subnet Mask and all that (that it was missing, and that I thought would populate automatically).

Finally it "connects". But I am still unable to connect to the internet. I no longer get the "IP Configuration" error, but I cant connect to anything.

Its [censored] frustrating is what it is. Im sure its not the laptops fault, but when it gives "help" in network speak, I feel like it doesnt want me to be able to figure out what I'm supposed to do next.

I just removed a D-Link from service for a client for its inability to provide a connection. His HP laptop and my T41 connect just fine to his office LinkSys and my home office Netopia. I cannot make the D-Link work and I *know* it is not the computers, so I ditched the D-Link. ... JD Hurst

You are connecting, but not to the internet?
Are you sure you are not connecting to the internet?
Perhaps it is just your dns - for instance, what happens if you go to http://209.131.36.156 instead of www.yahoo.com ?

I hear ya on that one, but my other laptop (Thinkpad) connects just fine. . .:/

Here are pictures of what is going on:

This is the picture of ThinkVangtage Connected:

This is the picture of me "connected" but unable to resolve any websites
http://img367.imageshack.us/img367/9186/network2at2.jpg

As for DNS, when I went to D-LINK's web based control panel. . .those were the values I put in, there were two of them, not seperated by any commas, but I assumed one ended when there was no following period.

For Default Gateway I put in the 198.21.0.1 (or similar) number, tha t I guess is related to the router (its the same number I use to access the web based control panel).

For IP (because the IP Configuration was the thing that was giving me the most trouble), I put in the IP that I guess is associated with my cable line.

I will get one of two errors (usually both):
Verify that the encryption settings (WEP/TKIP/AES) specified in this profile match those expected by the wireless network.

If the problem persists, contact your network administrator and provide the troubleshooting information below.
Verify that the wireless adapter in your computer has not been restricted from accessing the radio channels being used by the wireless network.

If the problem persists, contact your network administrator and provide the troubleshooting information below.
So, thats where Im at. Im to the point where I just want to wipe this harddrive clean, and just install a fresh copy of windows - since it seemed to be the only thing able to get me up on my X31 when I was having these problems.

I suggest turning off the security features (WEP or WAP) of the Router and on the ThinkPad just for a test. Also try turning off any software firewall just for a test. If it works, then you have narrowed down the problem.

You didn't mention which make and model of Wireless adapter your problem computer has.

Below are a couple of links that may help.

Its the 2511-E7U.

And disabling WEP Protection doesnt seem to work, nor does clearing out the entire location profiles.

I took the laptop outside, and tried to connect to various unsecured networks, and got the same run-around. The only one I was able to hook up to was a T-Mobile one, but that required me to purchase time to test it out.

It doesnt help that this freaking thing keeps on turning the RADIO OFF for some reason.

It makes no sense that one laptop made by the same company can connect, and another (that supposed to be better) can not.

Have you checked the libeay32.dll version in the WINDOWS directory? Try renaming it, with a .bak or .old secondary extension, then replace it with the one found in the Intel folder. That usually works.

Did you install any version of SSL from OpenSSL.org?

Are you using the latest version of the Wireless LAN Adapter Software (ThinkPad 802.11abg) - version 4.1.102.147? You can check with Software Installer. Note the following that applies with this wireless driver version.
Installation information for Windows 2000, and XP

Notes:
The following software must be updated when you install this package.
* Access Connections version 4.11 or later
* Hotkey Features for Windows 98/Me/NT/2K/XP version 1.22.0512 or later

Software Installer application provides install and uninstall wizards for this Wireless LAN Driver for Windows 2000 and XP.
That said, I kind of wonder if your adapter's radio is working in all modes; a, b, and g. If possible, change your router to use a different mode for a test. Also verify radio channels used by both router and ThinkPad are the same if you can.

First part I understood, except where to find the "Intel" folder (theres a ton of folders in the root C drive).

As for the second part, I have no idea what SSL and OpenSSL.org are.

As for wireless lan. . .says I have version 4.1.102.1095.

I REALLY want to like this laptop - only thing missing is glossy finish -

Perhaps an update would fix your problem. If you update, I would recommend uninstalling the Access Connections (if it is installed), uninstalling the wireless driver and uninstalling the Hotkey Features driver. Reboot, cancel any found hardware wizard, install the wireless driver, install the Hotkey Features driver, then install Access Connections (if you want). Reboot again, then test. Note the following regarding wireless driver versions.

Errr. . .I just let that Software Installer run for about 15 minutes total, and that seems to have done the trick. Its weird that the "new" Access Connections looks semi lamer than the "old" one.

Im still confused why Windows wouldnt work until I did this, but Im not going to complain, at all.

Thanks for the help - I was ready to throw this thing out the window.

It very nearly happened. I get frustrated VERY easily, and this thing was pushing me to the brink, especially since the X31 was working fine, but this guy refused to. I’m glad it was something I was doing, and that I hadn’t gotten hosed outta my cash.

Funny since I originally intended to buy this thing, only to trade it locally for something else – but man I don’t think ill be doing that. I only wish it had a card reader on it. . .i instinctively tried to put my old SD card into this slot on the right side, and was like “whoa – theres a lot of space on the side”. . .

That camera would also be nice.

Anyway – thanks for all the help all, you saved a ThinkPads life today. . .
