Brand new R60 - why is 17GB away from HDD?

#1 Post by bikemaniac » Fri Oct 06, 2006 10:57 am

I just bought a brand new R60 with a 60GB SATA Hitachi Harddrive. The R60 came with a WinXP Pro.

I started the R60, went though the automatic installation process (by clicking next a few times) and ended up in WinXP. Internet and wireless network was working right away. Perfect.

Then I checked the C drive, it said:

Entire disc size: 51,1 GB
Free space: 43,8 GB

Can this really be true?? That I have lost 16,2 GB due to "nothing"?? I haven't installed any programs yet. Additionally I insalled the small program called Treesize to see the size of the folders. It showed me a file on the C-drive of roughly 2,4 GB but in Explorer it is impossible to view that file and its contents - it is hidden. I ran disc fragmentation and it still only sees 51,1GB with a free space of 43,8GB. Can somebody tell me if this is normal??

Regards, Lucas Jensen

You've lost 7.3GB, not 16.2. Just because it's a 60GB drive doesn't mean that there's 60GB usable.

This is also due to the Hidden Partion Area (HPA) that IBM uses. Check this link.
