You need to install the Windows XP update modules before you can install the Audio driver you referenced. The Windows XP update modules contain the HDA Audio Driver.

Download the file from the link you provided above. The file is called OSFX31US.exe. Double-click on OSFX31US.exe to extract the files. Run ThinkVantage Software Installer to install the files. If you do not have Software Installer, it is available on the link I provided above.

You can also manually install the Windows XP update modules. Double-click on OSFX31US.exe to extract the files. Pay attention to where the files are extracted to. Go to Start > Run, choose Browse and navigate to the location where the above files were extracted to. Highlight (choose) setup.exe and click Open then OK.

Did you install the Audio Driver from the first link you posted after installing the Windows XP update modules?

Are there any yellow exclaimation marks or red X's in Device Manager? Go to Add or Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel. Check box at top to Show updates. Do you see SoundMAX in the list, and do you see Windows XP Hotfix - KB888111 in the list? Have you pressed the volume up button to bring volume to maximum? What about the Windows Volume icon in the notification area, are the volume settings above halfway, and nothing is muted except maybe Microphone and Line In? Have you tried the headphone jack?

That may be a good idea, but first I would try the following. Go to the first page you linked: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-61413 and download the driver 77a215ww.exe. After the driver is downloaded, double-click on the file 77a215ww.exe to extract it's contents. Next run Software Installer and choose Install or upgrade driver(s) or software. Click on Next >, then uncheck box Retrieve latest information on the internet. Click on Next >, then choose to install the Audio driver. After the installation is complete, then reboot. After the reboot, hopefully it will work. If not, then try from scratch.

I see you are new to the forum. Forum rules only allow the posting of images of less than 50K with a warning in the subject line.

First of all, I see you do not have the Intel Chipset Support drivers installed. I don't know if it would make a difference, but it might. I would install them right away.

I said to look for SoundMAX because the readme file for the driver said it was a SoundMAX driver. My T42 has SoundMAX, and that is what I am basing all this information on. Perhaps it is named something different in the Z-series.

Audio Features XI for Windows 2000/XP

Version 5.10.1.4230
=========================================================
Determining which version is installed
--------------------------------------
Windows XP
1. Start Windows XP.
2. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
3. Click Performance and Maintenance.
4. Click System.
5. Click the Hardware tab.
6. Click Device Manager.
7. Expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
8. Select SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio.
9. Right-click SoundMax Integrated Digital HD Audio, and select
Properties.
10. Click the Driver tab.
11. Click Driver Details.
12. Select C:\winnt\system32\drivers\ADIHDAud.sys, to display the version
number, where C:\winnt is the location the OS is installed.
(Confirm the last 4 digits are 4230)
Try running Software Installer and choose View driver and application version information. Do you see SoundMAX there? What about if you go to Start > All Programs > SoundMAX > SoundMAX Control Panel?

If you see SoundMAX above, run Software Installer again and choose Uninstall currently installed driver(s) or software. Uninstall SoundMAX and then reboot. Double-click on the file 77a215ww.exe to extract it's contents. Next run Software Installer and choose Install or upgrade driver(s) or software. Click on Next >, then uncheck box Retrieve latest information on the internet. Click on Next >, then choose to install the Audio driver. After the installation is complete, then reboot. After the reboot, hopefully it will work.

I have to leave for several hours, so I'll check this post later on, when I come back.

I am at a loss as to why it is not working for you. You could uninstall the previous installs, then run a registry cleaning program to remove errant entries, then reinstall the Windows XP update modules and the Audio Features driver.

If you have a Windows XP install CD, maybe you should just start over. Install a fresh copy of Windows.

I suggest you install the following at a minimum, and in this order:
1. The Intel Chipset drivers.
2. The Intel Speedstep applet.
3. The Windows XP update modules.
4. Power Manager.
5. The UltraNav driver.
6. ThinkVantage Active Protection System.
7. Hotkey Features driver.
8. The Audio Features driver (SoundMAX).
9. Other drivers.

If you want to install ThinkVantage Access Connections, then install it after installing the hotkey features, wireless, ethernet, and bluetooth drivers.
