My R40 will not charge at all. Here are the details:
According to control panel, battery is fine.
Charging light is always yellow under wall power.
Task bar gauge is stuck at zero.
Absolutely nothing happens when I try to power it up without wall power.
Computer dies when power cord is removed.
Charging for 24 hours does nothing.
The computer works fine under wall power.
The problem came after I descovered the computer crashed and the hard drive spinning continuously (on wall power). With wall power, restarting the computer worked fine, the battery was charged at 64% and stayed steady at that number. I decided to deep discharge the battery. Now it's stuck at zero.
Is this likely to be only fixable via hardware replacement, or is there some microcontroller setting that could work?
Thanks in advance.
John

How deeply did you discharge the battery? If you discharged the battery past a certain point, the safety circuitry in the battery will not allow the battery to be charged again. Certain types of charger can reset the safety circuitry so that it can be charged again, but otherwise the battery may be considered dead (even if it isn't).
See http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-16.htm for details, under the heading "Depth of Discharge". The part about lithium-ion batteries is the relevant part.

Not sure how to gauge how deeply I discharged the battery. Probably not to the point you are referring to, since the system went into hibernation.
Also, the battery health gauge in the battery maximizer utility remains a beautiful green.
Furthermore, as I indicated in my original post, the battery charging level remained rock-steady at 64% with the computer plugged in before I decided to discharge the battery. That is, it wasn't charging even before I discharged it. Now the charging level remains a rock-steady 0%.
