R32 CPU Upgrade (1.8GHz ==> 2.6GHz)

#1 Post by blackpath » Mon Oct 23, 2006 8:49 pm

Wanted to post that I was able to successfully upgrade my R32 2658-J3U from an Intel Pentium 4-M 1.8GHz (SL6FH) to an Intel
Pentium 4-M 2.6GHz (SL6WZ). I believe this is the maximum speed
processor you can put in the R32. It's been running for a day without any problems, and actually running a few degrees cooler (Mobmeter) since I applied arctic silver thermal compound to the heat sink when I replaced the processor.

Next, I try upgrading the old 20g hard drive to a new 80g 7200rpm Seagate Momentus.

Nice work! That is very good that the BIOS supports it.

The TDP (Thermal Design Power) for the 2.6 is much higher than the cpu you removed. With A30/A31 upgrades using the fan from the 'P' models helps, it's promising that the R32 will keep it cool since your temps. are lower.

Keep us posted.

R32 CPU Upgrade (1.8GHz ==> 2.6GHz)

I looked at my notes and my old Intel Pentium 4-M 1.8GHz (SL6FH) would hover at 56 centigrade, the new Pentium 4-M 2.6GHz (SL6WZ) hovers at 51 centigrade.

I ran a computationally heavy program for an hour and got the temp up to 59 centigrade at peak, but no higher. Cooled back down within 5-10 minutes to 51 centigrade.

Nice, very encouraging...when my R40 is out of IBM warranty I may try the same heart transplant. :)

Sure is hard to find an SL6WZ anywhere.. :P

Where'd you get yours from?
Are you planning on selling your 1.8 :)

I'd love to see how much of a battery life increase I can get by using the P4-m :D

Is the system still going strong, any long term side effects or is all ok?

Tempted to do this myself when the warranty runs out, if I can pick up a cheap cpu then.
