Q: USB hosts/ports in southbridge and USB ports ON MB

#1 Post by cbcb3 » Mon Nov 06, 2006 7:59 pm

Hello everyone. I have a question on the number of USB ports available in a PC and the number of USB ports that Intel ICH3-S southbridge offers.

From Intel's datasheet on the ICH3-S it shows that in the southbridge it has three USB hosts and two usb ports for each host. So the southbridge is capable of handling six USB connection at a time. But the number of available USB ports in a pc is far less than the number indicated in the datasheet. I understand that some non-usb connection, such as ultraport and ultrabay 2000 plus connection, are recongnized as USB connection. But there is still some USB resources in ICH3-S left unused.

I have no electronic engineering experience at all. I hope some one could share some relevant information on this. Thanks in advance.

Probably reserved for port replicator

2 on port replicator
2 on the thinkpad
1 for ultra bay
1 for bluetooth

I think.

does that make sense :\
