Dim Display

#1 Post by Bugsters » Mon Aug 30, 2004 10:43 pm

I have just purchased a second hand R40 and it was working fine the first time I turned it on. I did not have a power supply initially, so I ran it on a Targus 12v converter off a car battery (has worked on other IBM thinkpads in the past). Again, it ran fine. When I returned to the laptop some hours later, the display was so dim, that I could hardly see the display without straining my eyes.

I checked the display by plugging in an external monitor and the picture on it was perfect, but the laptop display was still very dim. I feel that the display has been damaged, but I am not sure.

If it is a faulty display, does anybody know what component it might be and how much they cost to purchase?

It sounds to me like the backlight burned out. Call IBM and see if the machine is still covered under warranty. They can also tell you the part # you need (or you can search google for compatible part #'s).
