R40e Slows down constantly

#1 Post by Pookster » Thu Nov 16, 2006 4:31 pm

Hi there,

I was wondering if somone knew or had experienced any of the following symptoms:

Slows down randomly when loading applications,
Slows down when playing back MP3's in media player,
Feels sluggish constantly.

I am currently experiencing these symptoms and cannot understand why.

I have got an 80gig 5400 HDD and also 1gig of PC2100 DDR ram, why would it run slow, unless somthing has died, any suggestions. I have ran a burnin test overnight and everything came up as being fine but it doesn't feel fine.

Looking forward to anyone who has any ideas what's going on.

Have you run hijackthis? Try to rule out any malicious things that are running with that, and do a scan with a few different spyware/virus scanners.

Many thanks for your time, I dont think it's malware I think it might be a hardware conflict, I have had to replace many of the original parts within my thinkpad due to them wearing out, e.g. Hard drive, I have changed the Fujitsu for a Seagate and memory I have upgraded to Samsung PC2100 1Gig and I have also fitted a QSI SBW241 CD-RW/DVD combo drive, would these have any effect on my sound lagging. I am also running.

Many thanks again for your help,

Hi again,

I downloaded a copy of AVG Spyware, and it detected Virtumonde hiding on my system, neither Sypybot or Ad-Aware picked it up dunno if it was a new strain or somthing, but things seems to have made my thinkpad alot let sluggish since removing it.

If anyone notices anything dodgy in the Hijack this log, please advise,

Insert your log file @ http://hijackthis.de

It'll let you know if there's anything suspicious.

I have ran the log though the link provided and it turned up nothing, and said that everything was fine so I'm now pretty sure it's not a spyware issue, any other ideas of what could be causing it.

I'm considering running HOTCPU to see if the processor is starting to fail or do you think ram could cause the problem.

Thanks again for all your help,

Do you run any temperature monitoring programs? Try MobileMeter if you haven't.

I'm not sure if it could be a memory issue, but you can quickly rule that out by using only one stick at a time (if you've got two).

Hey again,

Thanks for the link,

I've ran mobimetre and it's telling me that my CPU is running at 54 Deg C and my Hard Drive is running at 48 Deg C, do these tempritures sounds correct or a bit high, im not sure. I've got a funny feeling it could be an overheating issue though, I have already replaced the heatsink and fan once, but the replacment I bought I was not very happy with also it came from ebay so probably dodgy to start off with. The fan makes a clicking noise when it's on the old fan also made this noise but im not sure if that's normal.

Thanks for helping me with this :D

Those temps are fine. I had an R40 and the temperatures were always up around 60C when I was browsing or watching videos. Sometimes it would hit 70C. I've seen into the mid 80's on T2X systems.

The HD temp is fine. Mine will sit in the mid 30s during normal use, and peak at about 45C when downloading large files. I've actually seen 75C for the HD in my old R40, [censored] that was hot. Anything over 60C for the HD, I would be concerned.

Your temps don't seem to be a problem, so just keep an eye on them. Have mobilemeter run at startup so you don't have to worry about it, and keep the CPU on adaptive.

Hi again,

So any more ideas about what could be causing the problems on thinkpad with sluggish performance? I have contacted Seagate about the hard drive and according to them the hard drive temp is normal. I just dont know what is causing the problem.

I dont suppose it could be a driver issue or a page file issue, but I doubt that because the system has 1 gig of ram, allowing it to load the OS into memory. It's really odd and odd that it should happen all of a sudden.

Many thanks for all your advise, I shall keep @ it and see if I can resolve the issues I have with my system at the moment, if you have any other suggestions I would love to hear them.

Pookster

P.S. Do you happen to know if the R40e has any issues with Service Pack 2, I would presume it would not but just in case.

again many thanks

I think I may have found the cause.

I recently have been staying at my parents house, and not using my Belkin wireless network card, since I haven't been using the card, the laptop has not slowed down at all and has no problem loading applications and playing MP3's at the same time, so it appears to be an issue with my PCMCIA card.

I was wondering if anyone else had any problems while using the R40e with a Belkin Wireless G rated network card, the model in question is a 3000UK.

Many thanks and look forard to any input I get.

Do you have SpyCatcher?

From my experience, SpyCatcher caused a lot of trouble, even though it "faked" catching many probs.

Hi there,

Nope I dont have spy catcher installed.

I am wondering though if it's a heat issue, because last night when I was just using Open Office, the CPU temp rose to 80 deg, which seems stupidly high for a word processing application and here in England it doesn't get very hot, we currently have the same temps outside as Norway lol.

Also my cpu has started making a clicking noise so I think it could quite possibly be the fan that's causing the problem, I have already changed it once with a dodgy fan from ebay, and that clicked too, but im pretty sure when I first bought the thinkpad it didn't click at all. So im slightly confused by it.

Any input into this problem would be most helpful as I am getting to my whits end with this dammed machine, I know it's 4 years old but this has to be the worst built thinkpad I have ever owned.

I dont think this machine was a true ibm design, it feels more like a cheap and nasty Acer than a thinkpad.

thanks for looking @ my post,

Warren

On another note,

Does anyone know how hot the memory bay should operate at, because the underside of my thinkpad get's really hot, and Im wondering if it's because it's not liking having 1 gig of PC2100 ram installed into both slots, I know the memory bay is directly located under the hard drive, which also emmitts heat, so im wondering if this is what is causing the problem.

Please advise,

Whether something runs @ 1GB or 512 MB doesn't matter, only the number of rams

b/c each ram takes up same amount of electricity.

I have 2 ram chips, each 512MB , and they're not so bad.

Still Slowing down :(

#16 Post by Pookster » Sat Dec 02, 2006 6:28 pm

Hi all,

Well my poor old thinkpad is still slowing down for no apparent reason, the only thing i can put it down to is age and maybe it's just worn out, but I would be quite shocked for an IBM machine to give up the ghost after just 4 years.

Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Also a word of warning to all, "Don't buy used heat sinks and fans because there's a reason there used, e.g. there already nakkered and have been replaced"

DO NOT USE BELKIN WIRELESS CARDS THEY ARE RUBBISH

#17 Post by Pookster » Sun Dec 03, 2006 4:47 pm

Hi again,

Well after alot of playing around, i have discovered what was the issue with my Thinkpad R40e, nothing to do with the actual thinkpad but the dumb [censored] Wireless Belkin Card. Since removing the card, the driver and all registry entries for it, e.g. completely irradicating it from thinkpad and slapping in my Old 802.11g card which is a Dirty AMD AM1772 it now works fine with no slow downs what so ever.

I would advise everyone not to use Belkins on R40e's as there complete crap.

So it looks like that was it all along I can't believe I didn't notice that it was the card causing the problem after putting up with this for about 11 weeks lol.

It's so nice to be able to type and for the dammed cursor to move in time with my key depressions.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped me try and sort out my Antique of a think pad and keep it alive and kicking.
