Success! R40 Celeron 1.8 Mobile upgraded to P4-m 2.2

#1 Post by mmmkay » Mon Nov 20, 2006 1:44 pm

It works, it was easy, and it only took about 10 minutes.

Result: Much lower power consumption when running at the lower speed/lower voltage = much longer runtime.

The lowest power draw I've seen so far in the 5 minutes of testing is 10.48W, with the average around low 11's to high 13's. Increasing brightness back up to near max brings that up to around 15W.

With the 94.6Wh combined capacity that should net me somewhere between 6 to 8 hours of battery. Coool :)

I took pictures during the entire process, so I can do a quick write up if I can post it somewhere..

Here's the write up with pics.. it's currently 10MB but I'll see if I can shrink that down a bit later ;)

edit: fixed, 730K now.

I'm glad to know it worked!

One comment on the method: I cringe at the sight of the keyboard tethered to the machine via its ribbon. There is a tab on the LHS of the connector which will allow you to take off the ribbon and so keep the keyboard out of the way. Besides, the connector might work loose in the process. Other than that, great job!
Cheers

It's interesting to see how similar your Pentium 4-M R40 is to my Pentium-M R40. I recently followed the exact same procedure upgrading to a 1.7 GHz Pentium M. All the part placements are identical, as far as I can see.

10.48W minimum power draw is pretty darn good for a P4-M machine. My wife has a Toshiba TE2100 with a 1.7 GHz P4-M and I can't get it below 17W.

Yeah, you SHOULD disconnect it, I was lazy, and the cable was long enough and it only took a few minutes.

It would suck if I tripped up and ripped the connector off the motherboard.

Also, might consider getting a new motherboard to fit in to my R40, maybe a Pentium M system.. I can't figure out why my laptop has a tendency to crash when it's cool - as in not warmed up to about 35 deg C at least. Runs rock solid otherwise..

Wow. That' s some great battery life you're getting. I'm going to attempt the same thing soon. What kind of performance improvement are you seeing?

Also, thanks for posting the pdf!

Wow. The BIOS is fully recognised the processor. Are all thinkpad BIOSes recognised different processor (at the same socket of course)?

Any preliminari BIOS upgrade required?

I had already upgraded to latest BIOS revision (1.27) and the embedded controller 1.14 i think.

I just popped in the CPU and it was all good.

I can see it switching between 2.2GHz and 1.2GHz pretty frequently, like when I minimize Firefox and bring it back up.

It's about 20W just sitting there at 2.2, and with the hard drive spinning still I am somewhere between 13 to 16W right now.

I am considering swapping motherboard and going with a Pentium M system, since I have some issue with the suspend/resume.
