3 years warranty on R60/R60e series - buy or don't ?
After searching and consulting people here i came upon 2 specific machines to choose from:
R60e
CPU: Core Duo 1.8Ghz or Core 2 Duo 1.66Ghz,
RAM: 512MB
HD : 80GB/5400RPM
GPU: Intel GMA950
Ports: 3 USB 2.0, VGA.
Warranty: 1 year
R60:
CPU: Core 2 Duo 1.66GHz
RAM: 1GB = 512MBx2
HD : 80 GB/5400RPM
GPU: Intel GMA950
Ports: 3 USB 2.0, VGA, S-Video, Firewire, docking station support
Warranty: 3 years
After calculating the price of both systems i find out the cost would almost be identical (about 100$ differece)
if i upgrade R60e to meet the R60 configuration (an extra 512Mb and 3 years warranty upgrade).
Since i want to upgrade my memory(to 1GB or even 1.5GB) anyway
the decision has to be done upon the 3 years warranty upgrade -
yes or no.
What is your opinion on 3 years warranty upgrade for R series ?
It would cost me about 250$ over normal 1 year warranty.
Thanks.

The warranty is nice to have when you sell the notebook. Its value is debatable especially on a ess expensive notebook since its price equals a much greater percentage of the cost of the notebook. Perhaps if you plan on keeping it for the duration and rely on your notebook, it could give some peace of mind.

Yeah, i know...
R60e has only (the preferable) track point device, but thanks for noticing
I plan to use the laptop for at least 3 years from now, but again, you can never know, may be i will upgrade (or have to upgrade) sooner then expected, but i am not expecting myself to buy a new laptop every year of year and a half
R60 is worth for me to buy only cosidering i am going to upgrade my R60e anyway and straight away

Yes, please buy the warranty.
My R40 is 2 & 1/2 yrs old & I've sent my laptop to the factory several times - if I couldn't, I wouldn't be able to use my laptop right now.
For example, I think that the keyboard used on R is much weaker in durability (even though at first it types really well) than that of T series.
Maybe not, maybe I just pound on my keyboard when playing games, typing, etc.
But whenever you send your laptop for fix, they also replace your keyboard too.
And once my scroll wouldn't work because of the rubber underneath was basically ripped, they replaced the mouse & the touchpad, which also wasn't working -slightly.
After several bumps, my laptop's screen hinges were shaky, so they fixed that too.
They also sent me a new CD-RW/DVD after it did not work when my laptop was returned from factory for repair.
And what that repair was... re-imaging of the hard drive (b/c something messed up my backup thing & even factory content restore wouldn't work, even w/ the restore CDs.
the restore CDS, they sent me one when I the integrated restore system failed.

The R5x and T4x keyboards are identical and interchangeable.
I'd say buy the warrranty for the extra $100 approx. You'll have piece of mind plus the ability to request a new keyboard for just abuot any reason whenever you want one plus insurance if anything does break in 3 years. Other threads discuss this, but current laptops have major failures approx. 20% of the time within the first three years. System board, LCD or HD all cost more than warranty.
All that being said, I have owned one R30, one R32, three R40's, three R51's, and two R52's, none have needed service, yet. Knock wood. All have or do get plenty of use.

please do, I didn't understand my mom when she forced me to get the three year warranty.
I thought she was crazy. But no. No matter how you plan to use your laptop, it's going to happen.
I thought that I would be different from other people... I ended up being just like them.
Ok, I wasn't really clear & straight about all the problems I've had w/ my R40 so here it goes.
1) Keyboard weakening. It feels as if there are two stages of motion that a weakened key goes through when I punch it. And I can push it from the edges of the key without typing the key. And it makes this "pfickut" sound.
2) Touchpad (my little brother secretly stabbed it with something, I'm sure), it was replaced.
3) Touchpad & UltraNav mouse button sets (the left button for ultranav was not working), replaced
4) LCD hinge weakened
5) CD-RW/DVD replaced
6) 1 of the 2 hatches for the LCD wouldn't slide in completely. Still not fixed
7) Hard drive factory content restore doesn't work, doesn't allow factory restore CD to run

I went for 3 years on my R40 and I'm glad I did. First a key popped off, so new keypad. Then in early year 3 a new motherboard, which otherwise wouldn't be an economical repair. (I had to dump my previous out-of-warranty Inspiron for the same reason). Then a HD failure and replacement. Then last month it was stolen out of the Land Rover while I was on the beach 20 feet away!.
Now I'm getting a 3-year extension on the new R60. My feeling is that I want the warranty to last as long as I plan to keep it.
