R40 P4-m to Pentium M motherboard swap

#1 Post by mmmkay » Thu Nov 23, 2006 5:44 pm

Well, my last Celeron to P4-m swap went without issue. I wonder if anyone's tried swapping the entire system board.

I looked at the hardware manuals, and the keyboard bezels and lower cases are identical for the Pentium M models and the P4-m models.. leading me to think that the boards are similarly designed (mounting wise).

The only thing that might be an issue is trying to get the serial numbers to match up.

Whatcha think :)

A Pentium M CPU would definitely be faster, and with 94Wh combined capacity, I could be up and running all day.

Let me know if it works... no reason why it shouldn't, if you get all the numbers matching.

I've managed to get my minimum power usage down to about 6.7 watts idle... :)

WOW 6.7W. Which CPU are you running? I guess it doesn't really matter since they'll all change voltage and frequency depending on use.

Pentium-M 1.7 GHz running at 600 MHz idle, CPU voltage at 0.796V, mimimum display brightness, no optical drive and wireless off. It's an ideal situation - if I turn the display off, it goes down to just under 4 watts but it's not much use like that ;)

Under normal usage with any Pentium M processor, you can expect about 9.5-10W with wireless on, a DVD/CDRW combo and you're actually actively doing something light, like typing this forum reply or browsing web sites with little to no flash ads.

Oh ok.. 10W would still give me 9.46 hours theoretically.
6.7 is just insane.. 14.12 hours. Of course without wireless and just sitting there isn't really useful.. hehe

Thanks for the comparison. If I ever have to change the motherboard I guess I will get a Pentium M board

My proper running figures on battery mode are actually 8.7 watts idle with LCD brightness at 5, wireless on and DVD/CDRW installed. I only reach 10W when I am actively using the machine, such as typing into a web browser. It actually sits at close to 9 W when I am doing simple stuff like email or using a word processor.

So, in reality, power use is somewhere between the two figures I gave earlier.
