New Z60m very slow startup.

Hey all,

I just bought a new IBM Z60m with following configuration:

Centrino M 2GHz
2GB Memory
100GB HDD.

The problem is it takes more time to boot than my older IBM R51 (Pentium M 1.7Ghz, 768MB memory, 30GB HDD). I suppose it does that because of unnecessary programs running in the background during the startup.

I have used hijackthis to generate the following report, can anybody please pointout which programs could be responsible for that or what could possibly the problem be?

You'd be surprised just how much quicker things run without Symantec Antivirus/security running.

I used to be a fan but these days all of these security tools just slow your PC down. But if you receive email, Antivirus is important unless you use a server-based service to protect you.

Everything in the list looks pretty similar to my PC.

Have you tried to defragment your drive using the supplied diskeeper?

I'd say uninstall the Symantec software after locating a suitable replacement. (But be sure to uninstall the Symantec before installing alternatives, and do it while disconnected from the internet..)

I use NOD32 for antivirus, which is extremely fast and small (As well as effective,) and Ghost Security Suite to control program access to the Registry and networks. This setup sped up my system easily %50 over McAffee. Maybe even more for you, as Symantec is ssllooww these days..

I am facing the same problem but the symentic thing comes up after the machine gets booted.
Its slow in boot up.

Symantec always has processes running during the entire startup procedure even before login, it is generally only any GUI that it might pop up that you would see shortly after login.

I would recommend also running BootVis and seeing what software and/or drivers are loading and which one takes the most amount of time. After that, check the registry and run a registry scan to pick up any lose keys that might instruct the system to initialize links to files that don't exist anymore. Then go through msconfig or the Serivces section under Admin Tools and uncheck/disable any startup processes that you don't need. If in doubt if it is a critical process or not, uncheck, reboot, boot back into safe mode or restore if there is a severe problem; those processes are actually quite rare. Then defragment the drive, afterwards.

Check to make sure that recently intsalled programs haven't helped themselves to the startup list to list their own startup agents during their initial install.

I am running McAfee virusscan 2006 now and have also followed instructions given by "christopher_wolf", things are super fast now, wow.

P.S. Apparently I disabled some vital process in msconfig that left me without my lan connection, does anybody know what process that could be? it gives [res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm#] error while trying to open my homepage.
