R40e fan won't spin up.

#1 Post by msakaji » Wed Nov 29, 2006 10:47 pm

My R40e seems to overheat and then turn itself off. The fan works some days, and doesn't on other days...

When I remove the keyboard from it, I can see the fan twitching every 6 seconds or so, as if trying to spin up. There is nothing obstructing it's movement.. The CPU goes up to 85C and then the system bleeps and turns off.

What can I do to fix this? The tpfancontrol utility, when turned to smart mode, bleeps often and complains that 'sent fan speed 0x03 IGNORED' ... after two minutes, tpfancontrol turns off.

You should try a new/working used fan assembly. If you have a multimeter, measure the voltage between the red and the black pins. Should be something like 5V when the temperature goes up to 85C.
