G40 backlight weird issue

#1 Post by bart_dood » Mon Dec 11, 2006 11:52 am

So I have a G40 laptop that seemed to have an inverter or backlight issue (dark). I ordered a new inverter and when I put it in, now when the laptop switches on after a few seconds the light comes on for about 0.5-1 second after which is goes off again, I've checked the bulb with a high voltage power supply and it lights up fine, I also checked the outputs on the inverter and after the initial short on period the output is zero volts.

I've check the brightness level on the keyboard and BIOS and I've checked the lid open/close button (which works).

I've run out of options, any ideas whats going on?

:(

:D I had somethink like this happen w/ my G40....see if it works for you, too. It seemed like when I would pack it up at college and take it home with me, when I started it up the next time, the screen would be dark. The first time this happened to me, I had just reset my computer, and thought it was a driver issue...so I used another computer, and downloaded the video drivers, which didn't help, and downloaded every other driver that I could find...eventually, (when I wasn't looking) the screen came back on, so I decided I must have found the problem.

The next time or two, I had my trusty usb flash drive in the bag with me, and would re-install the display drivers...which seemed to fix it, for some reason...even though the new ones I installed were the same as the ones I just replaced. One time, however, I was plugging in the flash drive, and I saw the screen flicker. I 'wiggled the flash drive' a little, and the screen came back to life!!   Since that 2-month stretch, I haven't had it happen but another time or two, but if it does, I just stick a flash drive in one of the back usb slots (seems the top one works better), and wiggle it a little bit.

If some of the guru's in here looked at the mobo, i assume, you would probably be able to see what is causing the problem...but my G40 has to get me through college, so I haven't 'performed surgery' on it, to see if I can spot the problem, and when I ordered it, it was top of the line, so it's still a real good computer...compared w/ what's common today. I'm operating on my 600X instead...

Anyhow, sorry about the rambling...see if that helps w/ yours...it has always fixed mine, when the screen didn't light up.
