Absolute Mystery Part in A31

#1 Post by stoneco » Thu Dec 14, 2006 8:05 pm

My boyfriend had my A31 apart and put it back together without a problem, using the hardware manual. He has been a electronics technologist for almost 40 years. He was testing the charging circuits to see if he could fix a common problem.
He took it back apart to try something else and when he went to put it back together, there lying in the middle of the board was a small all metal piece that had a clip like mechanisim on one end and a screw hole and tab on the other end at 90 degrees. The part number is 26P9782 and the three hits on the internet say it is a Misc. Hardware. Wow! go figure. It is not even listed in the parts list on the IBM site.
Any ideas what this this part is and if it is important?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Go to page 116. Is that it?

A30/A31 HMM

Either that, or it could be the from the hinge cover (page 93). If not, you should be able to find it by looking through all of the pages in the HMM.

Thanks, but not there.

A kind of been there read that thing. We think it is part of the group of misc. system board parts and it might be some kind of lever listed, but there is no picture available in the manual. It works fine but for the original problem with the power circuit.

Have taken apart and rebuild about half a dozen A31(P)'s and I am not sure what part you are talking about.

Look at page 159 of the HMM.

Is it item i, j, d, e or g?

The only other small metal piece that is not shown in the HMM is a piece that goes in the top left corner of the base unit next to the hinge holder. Page 116 shows the location (in the magnified 'bubble'), but not the part. I believe it goes there to provide more strength to the corner.

This is the only part I had left over after the first time I disassembled an A31. Didn't find out where the piece belonged until I took apart a second A31.

If you're still not sure, see if you can post a picture of the part. That will soon solve the mistery.

The one in the blow out bubble is close but not dead on, mine has a 90 deg twist in it. Page 159 in my HMM is modem parts and that is not it. I have a Acrobat file "92p1902" as my HMM you might have a different/better one. I have taken 2 small phots of it, but don't have a server to post them from. If anyone wants to PM me I will send the photos directly so they can look at them. What ever it is it has to be some kind of support or hinge as the effect of it missing is nil. It just is bugging the <expletive> out of us.

Can you take a pic of the part? It sounds like the same metal piece from the T23s.

Ah, would that be the metal shield that goes under the ribbon cable to the LCD or the one that goes over the cable, securing the connector?

Ok I loaded my pics to my Sympatico Website. It's not like I use it for anything else. I can see them on the net, hopefully you can too. Try this address. http://www3.sympatico.ca/stoneco/

Looks like the URLs are pointing back to your own hard drive since I see the complete pathname back to your My Documents folder, and the sub-folders My Webs, Pics of Thinkpad, IMAGES.

You can see the pics, but nobody else can (change the "img src" tags).

The URL is fixed and tested on a separate computer, with FireFox, Netscape and IE and he can see them in all three.

Like I thought, this piece goes into the top left corner of the base unit. I think it is just there to provide strenght to the corner.

Next time you open up your A31, you will see it will fit perfectly in that corner.

ElbertR,

I think it is there to provide a place for a security cable to attach to.

Yes, it provides strength to the corner to attach a security cable.

Thanks, it fits perfectly once you realize that the hole is not a screw hole. I don't have any idea how it got out place in the first place but you have been a big help. The poor machine is now in box in pieces waiting on a new motherboard. I hope we can revive it as I have only had it (bought it used) for couple of months but I just loved it.
