Z60M keeps shutting down???

#1 Post by jeffmonteith » Thu Dec 21, 2006 6:54 pm

I received my new Z60M on Saturday and have successfully updated all Windows components inlcuding Explorer 7. I have only just started to install my normal suite of programs but have been hindered by frequent unannounced shutdowns. I'm at a loss and need help.

This usually occurs when running CPU intensive programs like diskkeeper or Call of Duty. I am at a complete loss, any help would be appreciated.

Specifications
Unit 2529EAU
2Ghz with 2 GB RAM
100MB hard drive
Windows XP SP2
BIOS 1.19

The only thing I can think of at this time is reoad to original specifications (without MS updates) and see if the problem persists.

Please help!

sounds like it's due to overheating, mine gets really warm too from time to time. You can check the CPU temperature with a small program called Mobile Meter at http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/ If that's really the case you might want to slow down the processor a little bit with software like Notebook Hardware Control or Speedswitch XP.

Does anyone know the temperature at which these things normally shut down? Is there a way that I can change this value?

Seems like a design or manufacturers flaw. I live overseas and need to know if I need to return this laptop now, before I head back home.

When first configuring the laptop, I remember being prompted for setting the cooling scenarios. It asked about what acceptable level of fan noise etc. - I can't find that set-up area now.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Notebook Hardware Control shows that my Z60m is shutting down when there is a critical temperature of 98 degrees Celsius. It looks like it's a default setting you can't change but I might be wrong.

I had the same experience with a previous laptop and it actually messed up my HD from the constant shutdowns.

go to Power Manager and create a new profile. It will ask you about max CPU speed, Fan and Display while on AC or battery. Hope it helps.

Note that the BIOS should run the fan and protect the unit from overheating whatever the settings are in Windows.

Is the fan running at all? It should at times run fast an audibly and at others slowly and at a barely audible level.

Windows generally won't affect the cooling capabilities of the laptop much.

Thanks.

I downloaded the software you mentioned and at idle my laptop was running at 89C - way too hot. When I loaded Call of Duty it shot up to 105C and then shut off, clearly the problem.

I then created a new profile under Power Manager, checked the temp and it had dropped 48C.

I have played the game, defragged, and as yet nothing has happened. Thanks a million for the tips.

Cheers and happy holidays.

Jeff.
