A22m - Moving powerbutton

#1 Post by loucephyr » Tue Dec 26, 2006 2:09 pm

Hi

I have a A22m and i'm working on mounting it in my car but i'd like to remove the keyboard and only keep a (not the original) powerbutton. But since the powerbutton and the keyboard are integrated this is somewhat of a problem :)

Anyone know how the layout for the keyboard connector looks, if it's possible to attach my own switch somehow?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

A hack like this would probably work very easy if you attach the laptop to a port replicator such as this one:

IBM Port Replicator

Part number (FRN) 02K8668 can be found on eBay fairly cheaply if you are patient. I bought some from a surplus computer store locally for about $5 each a couple of months ago. The port replicator has a power button already built in. You could take the port replicator apart and find the switch terminals for the power button and then figure out a way to remotely mount the appropriate switch. You wouldn't have the modify the laptop, plus the laptop would be easily removeable from the car.

It might be possible to do as you suggested but that would require a fair amount of time to figure out where the switch connections are on the keyboard connector. There are no schematics available to the public for any of the Thinkpads, as far as I know.

The laptop i have for this project made contact to the ground at atleast 3 times the recomended speed :) The screen and hinges was scrap, and much of the back of the case also, so i'm not wery afraid of digging into this.
