Thinkpad R51 Problem

#1 Post by bpopilek » Wed Dec 27, 2006 4:42 pm

Hello, I'm having a problem with my R51 Type 1836 notebook. This weekend I was using the notebook as usual, and as I moved it, it made a really weird sound and then just shut down. It was plugged in via the AC adapter when this happened. The battery has a full charge as well. When I tried powering it back on, it did turn on, but no display came up and I could not hear the hard drive spin up either. I then held the power button in and shut it down. I tried powering it back up, this time via the battery. It turns on, kind of. I hear a repetitive chirping sound coming from inside, not through the speakers. The battery light flashes with the chips, and if you look real close, both orange and green LEDs are lit. I have to remove the battery to get it to shut off. I have tried with no battery and just the AC adapter. It will again turn on, but the HDD still won't spin up, and no display again.

Does anyone know what could be causing it, or any suggestions of what I can try? It is now out of warranty so I have to try and fix it, or replace it. It has been sent back to IBM 3 times prior for a new motherboards. Could the board have gone out in it again? Thanks for any ideas!
