A22 display problem - getting all black once Windows boots
A22 display problem - getting all black once Windows boots
I fear I fried a friends laptop (A22) (Win98).
Somehow his screen got set so it was only using about a quarter of the area (centered) so I was playing with the monitor drivers. (Settings>Advanced>Monitor or adapter).
Now when Windows boots the splash screen works then it goes black (but it boots; you here the login sounds etc)
I did a safemode boot and it works fine.
I tried reseting the monitor stuff in safemode to the default drivers but the settings are not propragating to the normal mode.
What do I do?

Did some testing...
The bootup screen (BIOS) is only using the middle quarter of the screen for some reason.
AIDA reports a ATI RAGE P/M Mobility monitor adapter.
LiveCD Linux distros (DSL, gParted) use the full screen.
Win98 splash uses reduced screen size.
Win98 safemode uses reduced screen size.
Win98 normal does not send a signal. When plugged into an external monitor, it said it lost the signal.
Please advise!
Reinstall Win98?

Go into the BIOS settings and enable Hardware Screen Expansion, or something along the lines of that name. It should be under the Display menu, under Settings. That will allow your BIOS screen and windows bootup display to fill the screen if you wish.
If you power up the laptop with the lid shut (i.e. on a port replicator or docking station), it ought to default properly to using an external monitor. Without a port relicator or docking station, see if Fn+F7 allows you to switch between display devices.

Lemme reword that bit with the external monitor:
when booting into Win98 normal with an external monitor, I had the exact same thing as on the laptop. Mini sized boot, mini Win98 splash and THEN, when, on the laptop I got black, I get "signal lost".
EDIT: I got the BIOS setting - HV Expand. Thanks for that!

An update:
I reinstalled Win98 over the current system.
The install went fine until it reboots into Windows to modify the drivers. I lose the signal.
I installed Win2k and its working now.
I wonder if formatting then installing 98 would work... But I already installed codecs, FoxIt PDF Reader, AbiWord, etc.
