Ordered Z61t but forgot to choose BT

#1 Post by doema » Thu Jan 04, 2007 9:34 pm

Hi everyone,

I received my customized Z61t earlier this week and realized that I had forgotten to choose the model with built-in bluetooth. Does anyone here know if there's a way to have someone authorized to have this function installed internally and still have the warranty be valid? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately I don't think it is possible - I believe there is a separate BT antenna included along with the BT card itself. Seems adding BT after the fact is difficult/impossible with most notebooks as most are this way as well.

thanks for your reply. looks like my only hope is to wait for a bluetooth adapter for the express slot to be available sometime down the line.

Good morning...I am new to this group but offer some ideas.

First: Return the Z61t to Lenovo and order the correct model. Why not give them a call and see if this option is available.

Second: There is an upgrade path by installing a BT card in your Z61t. You can find a post on how to do the upgrade in the Z61t forum. Te card costs about $32 and is available from IBM. Installation does require that you are handy with a screw driver and can follow technical instructions. There is a step-by-step process for the installation.

Third: It is news to me that the Z61t has an Express card slot...it was my understanding it is a PC card slot (pcmica). Go to ebay and find:

Philips PCMCIA Cardbus Bluetooth Adaptor PC Card...selling for about $9.00

That sums up my two cents of input. I hope this helps you.

hi billp117,

thanks for your reply. i understand that customized notebooks cannot be returned. they do offer a z61t w/bluetooth, which has to be selected before proceeding to customize the rest of the notebook. i foolishlly overlooked this fact and assumed all z61t had bt as standard option. in any case, this being my cousin's laptop that i helped to customize, she will not want me to open the notebook up. so my only hope seems to be to wait for a bluetooth adapter for the express card slot, which im not able to find as of right now. it's a good thing that as of right now, bt is not a must for her (yet).

Z61t does not use the Express Card slot

Like I said...It is news to me that the Z61t has an Express card slot...it was my understanding it is a PC card slot (pcmica). Go to ebay and find either the PC card style or USB version.

I think you might have missed this comment and I did not want that item to remain a problem for you.

Good luck with your cousin. :)

While I have not seen a Z61t personally, it certainly seems that billp117 is correct. The tabook from Lenovo, and a review in Laptop Logic both say that there is only the PC Card slot in the Z61t (you can use a type I or II card). There is no ExpressCard slot.

If you wish to confirm for yourself, look for the following: If the slot is wide (54mm or 2-1/8") the ExpressCard pins will be on the left side, while the PC Card (Cardbus) pins will be basically the width of the slot. If the slot is narrow (34mm or 1-7/16" ) then it is definitely an ExpressCard slot.
