r50e video out
I bought this and have now discovered that it does not have a video out connector.
Is there any way I can connect it up to a TV?

R50e's should have a VGA out connector. Most newer TV's have VGA, HDMI or DVI inputs that can be used with the proper cable.
Update: R50e's DO NOT have S-video out ports.

I have gone into Access IBM and looked for vga out connector both through search index and looking at the view of the r50e from different sides. The only thing I can find that might work is the "monitor connector" situated on the right side. Is there any way to adapt a cable that will fit in this hole (I know it as a serial port) to work with TVs/scart cables etc?

You are right Allan. After looking at reviews of r50e, I can see that lack of svideo socket was highlighted as one of its deficiencies. I bought one on the recommendation of a friend and apart from this glaring deficiency (even my 600e had a video socket) it is fine. However what I want to know is whether there is a way round this problem eg using USB socket, serial socket... am I scraping the barrel here
I don't know about any other options but one way is to get a VGA to TV converter which uses the monitor/projector output. I would guess it needs some good advice though as there is such a range of features and prices (<$100 to >$1000).
Good luck with it.

intel (r) 82852/82855 gme/gm and 64MB Intel 855GM video chip
This is the graphics card details I have found out. I have looked at various converters but my worry is whether the graphics card can cope. Most notably when I go into thinkpad config and bring up display/advanced/graphics properties, there is nothing listed under devices except "notebook". However the intel page dealing with the above chip http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/i ... cs+852main&
shows various devices listed including TV and also Primary device and secondary device under extended desktop settings.
Any advice

I'm not an expert in this but I'm wondering if you aren't looking at the wrong details. The computer isn't putting out a TV signal so it isn't going to list TV as a device (which my R60 does). It is putting out a very different RGB monitor/projector VGA signal and that is what the converter will be converting.
I would call one of the (Googled) converter suppliers with the computer and TV resolution specs to get a definitive answer on what unit to order.
