R32 and 56k Modems - recommendations please?

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a means of connecting my R32 to the internet via 56k dialup.

I have been given a PCMCIA card but, try as I might, I cannot get past the 'Device cannot start (error 10)' indicative of a hardware conflict.

I have tried following the advice found here:

but I am using windows XP and I don't have a 'Basic configuration 0004' to choose.

I am considering an external USB modem, can anybody give me reasons for or against them? or perhaps suggest some alternative solutions.
