Standby doesn't function when undocked - Standby greyed out

I've been chasing this problem for several months. If I boot the Z61m whild docked, standby is available and works properly. I can go into standby, remove the Z61m from the docking station and standby still works properly. If I reboot the Z61m when undocked the standby button in the shutdown screen is greyed out and both standby and hibernate no longer function.

I assumed this is a poor driver loaded when the Z61m is undocked.. However I logged the boot sessions and the loads are very similar except the serial port and parallel port drivers are not loaded when undocked.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
