R50e No Mini PCI Wireless Card

#1 Post by Drumtochty » Sat Jan 20, 2007 7:04 am

Can anyone help?

Thinkpad R50e, 1834 8RG, Celeron 1300, 256 RAM, 30 Gig HDD.

I can find that it did not include a wireless MPCI when supplied. Info from the from the Lenovo site. This is a UK supplied model.

The memory slot accessible from the bottom of the machine has no SODIMM in it. Hoped to find the Mini PCI socket and antenna there as well.

The maintenance manual does not include this particular machines spec, therefore can anyone advise.

1 Did any R50e motherboards not include a Mini PCI socket?

2 Does it already have an internal antenna included?

Unusually, I have not dismantled the machine to check this out. Do all R50e models require the removal of the keyboard and the mouse / top panel to access the Mini PCI card?

Eddie,

The easiest way to tell is to remove the keyboard and palm rest. Once the keyboard is removed you can see any antenna wires. Once the palm rest is removed you can find the Mini PCI slot. It is located near the speaker assembly at the front of the laptop.

Some Celeron models did not, in fact, have Mini PCI slots (obviously they would also not have antennas).

It should be easy to spot if your machine has the slot..there should be 2 wires (grey and black..main-aux) running from the right side
cover hinge to the area around your palm rest, as explained in the previous post.

If its not there, your alternative is a PCI card.

Check this link for other details about R50e's, and of course the HMM manual is available from the IBM site.

I thought for a change to take a measured approach without taking it to bits.

Seems a look inside is needed to confirm that no antennas are in there and just in case there is no mini PCI slot.
