A30p Keyboard problems

One of the plastic keys on my A30p has suddenly become dislodged. It is one of the keys in the group of 6 keys located at the bottom right hand side of the keyboard.
The key does not appear to be broken or damaged in any way and the tiny plastic pieces underneath the key face seem to be ok.
I need detailed step-by-step instructions as to how the key can be repositioned and locked into place again.
Can anyone help me please?

I lost the top left one of those six from my R40 - I found it sitting next to the TP on my desk one day, it popped off by itself. I battled with it unsuccessfully for an hour but was then told by IBM that they just replace keyboards instead of trying to re-fit keys.
Someone may know the trick though.

I've disassembled two X20 and one R40 keyboard and all I had to do to refit the key caps was to put it back in the approximate correct position and press down. It then clicked back into place.

You have to make sure the plastic hinge assemblies are attached correctly on the actual keyboard itself. If you want, I can try to post pictures.

I have some photos and instructions on how to replace the key cap on a R40. I popped the left arrow key cap off my R40 and replaced it. View the photos using the links supplied. The instructions here are the same as the photo captions.

Be careful! I am not responsible for any havoc you end up wreaking on your own keyboards. All I know for sure is that it worked on mine (R40 2723-26M).

Step 1:

Key cap and key assembly. Notice the side with the two clips (on the right of the key cap). The other side has receptacles that slide over the projections on the key assembly.

Step 2:

Slide the key cap over the key assembly, left hand side first. This will allow the little projections on the key assembly to slide into the receptacles on the key cap. Once that side is solidly locked in, let the key cap settle squarely on the key assembly.

Make sure the key cap is reasonably square over the key assembly and press down until it goes click. The sound it makes could be a crunch, but that's subjective.

If you are pressing hard and the cap is still not clicking into place, you may need to re-align it and do step 2 again.

I just discovered that my wife's R40 has a different keyboard to mine, yet we both have identical model numbers. Reassembling a key on that keyboard is a bit more involved, especially if the whole key assembly came off.

One of those arrow keys on my R31 popped off while I was reassembling it after fixing the overheating problem. I just put it back in position, pushed down, and it clicked back on. It seems fine.
