A21e (2628-CXU) memory upgrade?
All,
I just acquired an A21e Thinkpad (2628-CXU) and am looking to upgrade the memory as it still has the original 64MB (and Windows XP as well). I'd like to take it to the max possible, but I'm seeing conflicting information as to whether that's 256MB max or 512MB max. Even IBM's documentation conflicts in at least one place.
Here they state that the 256MB DIMMs are not supported on the 2628
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4NVU4N
But when you drill down into that part they show that it's compatible with all 2628 here!
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4E4RG3
Crucial and PNY both show that they sell 256MB DIMMs adn Crucial has their compatibility guarantee but I'd prefer to either buy generic cheaper RAM or buy it off eBay to keep my costs down.
Any help here would be appreciated!

Yes, their memory is limited by the Intel 440MX chipset they're built on to 256MB per memory slot.karn wrote:Is that the most, (512mb) that these laptops can hold?????
Same goes for those Thinkpads built on the Intel 440BX chipset with the exception of the 600E and X series which have, in effect, a third memory slot as they have memory permanently installed on the MB.

Did you get your A21e 2628 to recognize 512M of RAM?

If it's A21e with a Celeron, it tops at 256MB.
Pentium 3 machines max out at 512MB.

It's an A21e with a Celeron. It's only used as a file server, so 256M is acceptable.
