Software Instillation Problem: SMAsetup.msi (error 1706)

#1 Post by GStenerson » Thu Feb 01, 2007 7:11 pm

I puchased the Z61x when my old laptop went south for the winter. I am seeking to install some software for an application requireing software and a USB port to communicate. The software loads easilly, but just before finalization it asks microsoft to configure the Systems Migration Assistant...and subsequently says it can not find the smasetup.msi file to complete the set up. (error message 1706)

If you igore the error message the software loads and restarts the computer. Asked you to insert the software key into the USB port...the computer acknoledges the new hardware....Immediately followed by "software seeking and can not find aksub.sys file in Aladdin file: (c:\\windows\system32\setup\aladdin)..Aladdin install disc needed. ???

Need some help here....believe its a problem with the Thinkvantage used in the Think Pad..changing something in the SMA file system. I easilly loaded this software into my Windows 2000 portable before it had a power supply crash. I also loaded it into my home computer. Now this new X61t computer...and failure. Linovo says, not our problem, talk to IBM. IBM tech support (new person offered to look it up on Google to help) says never heard of this error 1706 or Aladdin before, must be a Microsoft problem...Ever try to get a human on the line at Microsoft? Everyone pointing to someone else, with me odd man out.

I'm sure some expert out there can provide me with some explanation and hopefully a step by step correction. Thanks in advance...HELP PLEASE! Gee I hope this isn't a major problem!

Warder:
Thanks for the feedback. I too saw the responce you forwarded when I looked it up on a Google search.

I didn't want to delete any files since I've only had the new beast a few days...it's totally new. ..and I'm still learning what it does, and doesn't do. Thought this problem might be something at least someone else would have seen before.....and easilly corrected. Maybe not!

May have to delete files if can't find a better solution.

Thanks
Gary
