A31p and Ultrabay 2000 DVD

Just a tidbit for anyone that will be purchasing one off of Ebay or whatever down the road....

I picked up one last week for my A31p and it arrived yesterday. Really clean, etc. Plugged it in the laptop, and it was never detected. Plugged it in the other bay, and it was not detected....could even eject it while XP was running, or insert it, and no protests from the laptop, or shutting down....hmmmm

Stuck it into my T23, and it was detected normally. Could hotswap it out, read from it, etc.

I ran out of ideas, so I thought I would upgrade the firmware on the DVD player. It was a Toshiba Model SD-C2512 (Toshiba lists a SD-C2612) , which is not even listed on Toshiba's website. Even though it has a FRU on it of 27L4213, it does not appear on Lenovo's site as a valid FRU.

So, I found updated firmware for it elsewhere,
burned a boot cd, inserted the dvd player into my T23, upgraded the firmware on it, and success. The A31p now recognizes it normally.

Just curious now...why would a T23 detect this, but not an A31p?

I'm really curious too. I've run across this issue as well when I had a T23 and my wife had an A30, but don't remember the drive involved. I'd like to find out about this as well. :?
