R52 Broadcom LAN Speed Problem
R52 Broadcom LAN Speed Problem
I currentry have a problem with my R52 using a Gigabit-Connection with the onboard Broadcom Netextreme Gigabit LAN-Card, i don't get a really gigabit-like throughput.
I tested the Connection to:
- Intel PRO/1000 CT and Intel PRO/1000 MT (Onboard in my Servermainboard [Supermicro P4SCI])
- R52 with same Broadcom-Card [almost same model, just bigger CPU, better TFT and Fingerprint-reader]
tested with different cables, even a cross-over (which isn't needed on Gigabit)
The Max-Value i get on Networktransfers is a 6% load [about 6 mb/s max] , the Cards both say, they are connected with 1000Mbits.
Something which was surprising me, was the Process "system" is running between 60 and 95% load. The Networkload is jumping while transfer from 0% to 6%, no really "stable" performance.
I tried to kill all other processes, programms (firewall, virus-scanner, even all other ibm-programms like Access Connections) but no change.
Then i tested with a driver direct from the Broadcom-Homepage, same results, no gain in Speed.
One thing i saw, was suprising me too, in the Hardware-Settings of the Broadcom-Card the point "Speed & Duplex" only has these possible Values:
10 Mb Full
10 Mb Half
100 Mb Full
100 Mb Half
Auto
No 1000 Mb Setting(s)
Other Informations:
I always was conntect to power, Energie-setting was Max Power.
Anybody has some more Ideas what i can do ?

If you're still around. . .
It'll never happen. Those speed ratings are in perfect laboratory conditions transmitting a specific amount of data. In real life you'll never get the advertised speed. Here is a little something from another forum that I posted:
There have been several questions lately about network speed. I thought I'd just test it. I have my home network wired (100 Mb/s) and wireless G (54 Mb/s). Wired are two home builts running XP Home, 2 Gig processors, a Gig of RAM each. Wireless is my IBM ThinkPad R-40 P4 2.2 Gig processor, 768 Meg of RAM with an Intel BG2200 wireless card.
My test was to move a large file, just one single file, not a bunch of small files, from one machine to the other. I chose a copy of SP-2, 266 Meg in size. Theoretically the wired connection should have taken close to 2.6 seconds and the wireless around five. Not so. The results:
Wired - 30 seconds.
Wireless - 100 seconds.
As I've stated in previous posts, those advertised speeds are in perfect laboratory conditions.
Humbly submitted,
Wayne

I now tested a knoppix-cd and trying it on linux and speeds between 25-30mb/s on a single-file-copy and 35-40mb/s when doing 2 transfers, seems my windows sucks a bit, will try to reinstall, if it doesn't do at more speed than currently on windows, think it will be a call to lenovo, because why should i buy a gigabit adapter when it does not even get 100mbit speed on a direct connection in windows ?

Also. . .
Don't forget about your hareware speed. No way a hard drive can send or receive as fast as the connection might be. Example, if the transfer (read/write) speed of a given hard drive is 20 Mb/s, what do you think the LAN speed will be?

i know it can't be faster, but for sure faster than my current speedWayne wrote:Don't forget about your hareware speed. No way a hard drive can send or receive as fast as the connection might be. It may be late, but after switchting to GNU/Linux (first ubuntu 8.04, then 8.10) my Gigabit now works like it should.
With iperf i get values of about 90mb/s, cpu doesn't go crazy like under windows und the limiting factors for the speed over netzwork is now the read/write-speed of the harddisks on both sides (my server and my thinkpad).
That is how it should be
