PC Connection sold me OEM processor?!?

#1 Post by tbessie » Wed Sep 15, 2004 8:09 pm

I'm not sure about this, but I ordered a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4M processor from PC Connection, and it arrived without fan or heatsink. I called Intel, they told me that that would typically happen if the chip were an OEM chip, and thus not subject to Intel's guarentee.

Why would a major distributor like PC Connection send me an OEM box without saying it was OEM on their website?

The order even said "Heat Sink and Fan included"!

I know it's a pretty dumb question, but have you called them? It might be a mistake. I'm sure they will resolve your problem.

I called them, they didn't know the answer, and that's when I called Intel.
I called them back, their Customer Support people couldn't help me, and they told me to call Technical Support (which was closed when I talked to them, so I'll be calling them today).

How could they not know. Only 1 of three things could have been sent. Retail - you get the nice box / heatsink and fan / 3 year Intel warranty. OEM w/ aftermarket heatsink fan. Usually 1 year warranty from seller. OEM without anything, usually 30 day warranty from seller. If you got the 3rd option and expected the first, call and complain, simple.

Well, I called Intel again

And they told me THIS time that no, since it's a laptop CPU, it doesn't come with a heatsink and fan. So I got conflicting info from them.

But it was in a Retail box, so I guess it IS retail.

I decided just to take what the last guy at Intel told me, since he seemed to know more than the first guy I spoke with did.

But this time they were right! The fan and heatsink on mobile CPUs are specific to each different laptop, ergo the retail mobile CPU from Intel comes without these items, they're provided by the laptop manufacturer.

I have been purchasing from PCConnection longer than any other online retailer. They are fair and cooperative. I would just call them and ask them why, as well asking them to take it back if you don't want it.
I'll bet the price was right for what you got.

PC Connection was fair

In fact, the woman I spoke with today about it went to great lengths to find out which company THEY had got the chip from, and find out more about them. So I no longer am complaining about them.

And, as I found it, it's just that their listing in their catalog is wrong in saying that the chip comes with a fan and heat sink.
