A31p - System restarts & freeze after lid close

#1 Post by Seweryn » Tue Feb 06, 2007 7:34 am

Hi All,

Further to my previous post -
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ht=seweryn

Because I couldn’t solve the problem, I formatted the HDD and reinstalled whole system (win 2000 Professional) in my A31p 2653R6U from scratch again.
Then I installed all windows updates and some drivers, etc (using Software Installer in most cases). I checked the lid – all worked fine (when I set the Power Manager to not go to standby – the system didn’t go to standby, all fine as it should work). Actually I checked it a few times and it worked great.
Next day I kept installing all the programs and the rest of some drivers. At the end I checked the lid button how the power management works. Unfortunately, I found very same problem again! After I close the lid (the Power Manager is set to “do nothing” after the lid close) system shuts down immediately (without saving – just shuts down) and restarts. But then it freezes in a half way - when the Windows 2000 Professional screen is displayed (way before the password tab is displayed). Then I have to press the power button to turn the machine off and start again. Very strange to me... It looks like some kind of conflict of drivers, but I have no idea how to solve it and where to look.
However, if I set the Power Manager to go to standby when the lid is closed – it works fine (system goes to standby and when the lid is up after – it comes back to normal, all great).

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

I also tested the HDD (it is new 7K100) using PC Doctor. All tests - Passed.
But when I inserted the Win 2000 CD and run chkdsk /p (in “Repair” mode) the comment was: “...one or more errors...”. Would it mean that the HDD is faulty as hardware or some files are missing, etc?

Thanks for any help.

Regards,

Seweryn

Freezing A31p

#2 Post by schen » Tue Feb 06, 2007 1:48 pm

Try taking the MPCI card and daughter cards out and then boot it. I had something similar happen to an A21 and it turned out to be a bad MPCI ethernet combo card. It would hang at the driver load.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220

Finally... My A31p works as it should.
I formatted the HDD again and reinstalled all programs step by step, checking every time after each installation.
The problem was with Zone Lab Firewall. After I uninstalled it, all came back to normal.
