TCP/IP Stack and wireless issue

#1 Post by TPadguy » Thu Feb 15, 2007 2:59 pm

Hi,

I am working on a R52 which got messed up by Intel wireless Access Connections problem after downloading a while back from the System Update. After many hours doing things I finally re-imaged the machine. I re-installed all Thinkvantage stuff manually and in the correct order. All was working fine for quite a few days as a standalone machine.

After finaly attempting to rejoin the machine to the domain(which was done successfully), all seemed to be okay until I did a complete shutdown and reboot. After doing this the TCP/IP stack was corrupted. After resetting the stack all seemed fine even after restarts until another shutdown and cold start.

After resetting the TCP/IP stack all is fine again until shutting down the machine.

Anyone have any idea what might be going on here? I really need to get this machine back to it's owner ASAP but it is not stable. I have made little or no headway with Lenovo support on this as they seem convinced that it is Win XP issue not Lenovo. My theory is that many of the Thinkvantage Apps have a dependency on the TCP/IP stack and they are most likely the ones messing up the stack. Any thoughts on this? Of course this does not explain why it worked okay before rejoining the domain.

I have wasted so many hours on this machine trying to recover it from what was Lenovo's fault in the first place and REALLY need to get it back.

Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.....By the way, obviously the Ethernet card does not work either when stack messed up.

Thanks

What exactly is happening when the TCP/IP stack is "corrupted?" Does this happen if you disable wireless and only use the wired Ethernet?

Yes, basically both cards do not function. So doing and ipconfig yields only

Windows IP Configuration

After resetting the stack all works fine till another cold start....

Basically, everything works normally except for no connectivity wired or wireless. Hitting Fn+F5 shows wireless card turned off and cannot be turned on, probably due to the messed up stack..

OK. But you are saying a complete restart messes up the stack (and how do you reset the stack? Reinstall TCP/IP?).

If that's the case, if you completely disable wireless (not Fn+F5, but disabled in the network properties), and then do the cold restart, never using wireless, does the stack still get messed up?

Are there any messages in the event viewer relating to networking?

I am using the netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt comand to reset the stack.

Yes, disabling the wirless card in device manager still yields a non-functioning ethernet card and no ipconfig.

I look through event viewer and everything appears to be normal. :?: :?:

Can you post a link to a copy of your reset log?

yes, I can but I need to go back to that machine to send it. Give me a few minutes.

Thanks......

I'm guessing you only had the Ethernet enabled at this point -- is that correct?

Did you install XP from a recovery disk or from a generic XP CD? If the latter, what Ethernet and wireless drivers are you using?

Well, at the point that this log was generated, the two cards were enabled. The re-image was done using the Lenovo factory supplied CD recovery disks.

The ethernet and wireless drivers are the latest manually installed from the Lenovo website....

Note: at the point that the TCP/IP corrupted, the wireless was enabled but not connected for what that is worth.....

It's complaining about a bad "TVTPktfilter" value, and I think this is part of the ThinkVantage NDIS driver set.

If you go to Ethernet connection properties, what do you have listed under "This connection uses the following items"?

And in Device Manager, under Network Adapters, what devices do you have listed? For each one, can you click Properties > Driver, and check who the provider is? Then click Driver Details and check what the driver filename(s) is?

There is something out of whack on your system and need to find it ... it's a bit of a wild goose chase, though.

Yes, but it might take some time because I need to get back on that machine and check out all that.

I will try to get back to you in a bit.......

All the selections are checked in the properties of the connection including TVT Packet filter for both WLAN and LAN cards.

Ethernet driver provider: Broadcom ver 9.25.0.0

Wireless driver provider: Intel ver 9.0.4.26

BroadCom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet

Intel Pro 2200BG

I would try uninstalling the TVT Packet Filter ... the error messages are pointing to it and it might well be the culprit. Of course the risk is that you'll lose network connectivity, so have the drivers handy so you can reinstall if necessary.

According to Lenovo the TVT Packet Filter is neede to do network backups from R & R. They suggested trying to uncheck it in the properties and see what happens.

They said it's only puropose is for network backups..

First I will try unchecking and see what happens. Would I find the re-install package up on the Lenovo Downloads page?

After unchecking TVT Packet Filter on each network card, it still corrupts TCP/IP stack on cold start but here is the current reset.log:
