RAM Upgrade for my z61t

#1 Post by kuchu » Fri Feb 16, 2007 4:56 am

I am trying to upgrade the ram for my z61t and I am a little confused. I just read the "Hardware Maintenance Manaul" for the z61t and the instructions for replacing the DIMM appear to require removing the palm rest. Am I missing something? Shouldn't there be a more easily accessible RAM slot in the back or somewhere else?

For reference: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 845_01.pdf

No you are not missing anything. In the ThinkPad laptops, the RAM slots are under the palm rest (actually under the trackpad). This is not such a big deal since removing the palm rest is fairly straight forward.

Lenovo has good documentation on the steps required to do a RAM upgrade and if you follow them, you should be fine :-)

It depends on the model of Thinkpad laptop. As you have discovered, in some models, including the Z61T, the RAM slots are under the palmrest which is, as has been stated already, not very hard to access using instructions available on the Lenovo website.

Older thinkpads had addition memory slots on their bottom compartments which was quite easy to access even for average users.

Once again, this depends now and depended before, on the model. The X32 and X60 i own both have the easily accessible trap door on the bottom of the laptop and both ram sticks fit in there.

My former T42 and present T43 have an accessible slot on the underside but the factory loaded slot, if it needs to be uprgraded, is under the keyboard.

On the Z6xT series, the RAM is all under the palmrest.

I don't think they have just all of a sudden made RAM upgrades more difficult. Some models are and some models have been easier to upgrade than others. Fortunately, once you get over the anxiety associated with removing the keyboard or palmrest, you realize that the effort involved is pretty minor no matter where the RAM slots are located.
