Optical Drive does not respond

#1 Post by tatze » Fri Feb 16, 2007 5:34 pm

Hi everybody!

Since I upgraded a few drivers I got the feeling that my optical drive (Panasonic, UJDA 740) does not work properly anymore. From time to time I got sth. like the following error message in the windows system log "the device \Device\Ide\IdePort1 did not respond during the error wait time". Then one day the computer did not start anymore until I removed the optical disk device from the computer. When I plug it in the computer (already running under windows (XP, SPI)) nothing happens, its not even recognized anymore. All drivers are updated now, also the BIOS. Yesterday I updated the Embedded Controller to version 1.14 and the device worked again (first time in 3 months, it could read CDs). BUT, after restarting the machine the optical device was not found anymore.

My last idea was to phone the ibm support center. But they told me that they are not allowed to give me an answer because it happened after the guarantee time.

To summarize the story:

- the optical disk device (ODD) is not recognized by the machine
- the ODD has been recognized after updating the embedded controller but the machine forgot it after rebooting

I'm not sure yet if it is a problem of the ODD or of the system I got. To get a new ODD its not too much effort. To find out about the system its quite expensive to send it to IBM to check for the problem (an extern reader/burner is not that expensive).

Do you have any advices? Did you hear about such a strange problem? I hope you have some good ideas....

Do you know anyone else with a Thinkpad - doesn't have to be same model as long as ODD drive fits the bay - then you check whether it is ODD or system prob.

rehi!

I checked it with another ODD someone of the german thinkpad community gave me. Its the same, nothing happens if it is connected. Optical drives may be not "recognized" anymore. There are also plenty of posts to that problem that has not been solved yet. As we all have no warranty anymore it may be a never ending story.

Easiest way: run the drive as an external drive via USB

Try deleting your ide drivers. Windows will re-install them when restarted.
