Problems with Z61m Backlight Failing

#1 Post by bkleyman » Tue Feb 20, 2007 4:37 pm

Hey All,

Two weeks after purchasing my Z61m the backlight went out. It was an all of a sudden issue. The computer was not exposed to any poor conditions. It is well maintained and well looked after.

This is the third ThinkPad laptop I've worked with and have never had problems like this. Short of completely replacing the LCD, there is no other resolution.

Have any of you ever experienced issues with the backlight failing suddently or after long use?

Thanks!

I think your only option is to send it in for warrenty repair. First, just make sure the LCD brightness isn't turned all the way down. I know, if I turn the brightness on mine all the way down the LCD is effectively off.

bkleyman,
may i ask you if you have a titanium lid?

the reason i'm asking is i have a plasic cover z61m 9451 korean and the flex almost gave me a heart attack.

when you open the latch with one hand, the lcd flexes severely, i was expecting this b/c i read about this before i bought the system.

the most disturbing part is when you try pressing in between the hinges with the lid closed. the flex is heart breaking.

to my understanding, there is only one backlight to the lcd and it's located at the bottom of the lcd (where i described)

i suspect that this would be very weak and would be a problem when carrying....

i agree with dsalyers regarding warranty repair. you should send it right away...

is it possible that you activated the external display.. ?

it should not allow this unless there is a display attached, but its worth the ink, to ask.. :)

Broken LCD - FIXED

#5 Post by bkleyman » Thu Mar 01, 2007 5:13 pm

Hey Guys,

Thank you all for responding! The lid was in fact a titanium lid. I checked (probably 100 times) if the brightness on the device was turned all the way down.

It was definetly a backlight issue because you could see Windows loading and could see the desktop when it loaded.

Sadly, the only thing I could do was get it repaired. I extended my warranty to include onsite repairs. I had a tech come out and fix the device. When he took the old LCD out, he showed me the backlight and it was burnt out! He said it's really strange but it just fried!

So, other than this new battery recall, all is well.

Thanks again!!

I have a titanium lid too and untill now there have not been any issue about the screen. What is your screen manufacturer? Mine is LG.

About backlit actually ithink Z61 have two source. One is the bottom of the screen and the other is the upper part of it.
