how to disable ATI shared memory

#1 Post by chaukap » Sun Feb 25, 2007 11:03 am

Hi All,

I have a Z61p-9452JRU, which has 256MB of DDR3 VRAM (ATI mobility FireGL V5200).
However, ATI uses hypermemory which takes up another 256MB from my RAM for graphics, something I learned about on this forum.

My question is how do I disable the shared memory so that I have more available physical memory. I have already tried two things,
1. Check all the settings in the BIOS and could not find a option to change that.
2. Installed a program "ATI tray tools", which configures the graphics performance. There is a setting to uncheck "Enable Shared Memory", which I did but nothing changed. My system still shows 512MB for graphics. I tried to do it again after a reboot, but it just crashed my system.

I typically use my laptop for mathematical comptations and never for gaming or CAD, so will like more RAM.
Can anyone please help me in with this ? Also if anyone can post a link to a good article about optimizing RAM or memory management that would be great.

Thanks,
Z61p - 9452 JRU, XP pro 32-bit, 15.4 WUXGA, Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 160GB-54k HDD, 2GB-RAM, 256MB-VRAM, Intel ABG Pro, Bluetooth, DVD Multi Burn.
