Win2K install on A20m

#1 Post by dstrong » Tue Mar 06, 2007 5:45 am

I just picked up a used A20m laptop with a 6 gig hard drive with no OS installed. What would be the best way to install windows 2000. The laptop has a cd rom drive installed should i try to boot from the cd or make a set of install floppy disks. Thanks

Welcome to forums!

Run W2k install from CD-ROM, set boot device to CD-ROM in BIOS (press F1 button during boot), no need for floppies. If I would be you I would put newer/bigger HDD first.

That's the OS i insalled on my a20, just because I didn't want to put much money into more memory right now (poor). Windows 2000 is still a very good, very reliable operating system that you can get running in as little as 128mb of memory fairly well (and fast).

I used nlite on my Windows 2000 Professional install in order to get service pack 4 installed as well as most of the windows updates. It also helped trim some extra junk out of windows that I didn't think I would need for a small "surftop". I also included the touchpoint drivers and wireless card drivers. At the end of the process, nlite makes you a nice customized Windows 2000 SP4 CD just right for your A20m.

Drop in the CD, set it to boot from CD and away you go. Have fun with your A20m!
A31 Config: 1.6Ghz processor, 2048MB ram, 30gb hd, DVD-RW/CD-RW, DVD-ROM
A20m Config: 700Mhz processor, 384MB ram, 30gb hd, internal wi-fi b/g, dvd/cd-rw

Thanks for the help I'm planning on installing a 10 gig hard drive in the unit. The laptop has 128 megs of ram installed, I have the security update cd that Microsoft released in 2004 so i can install SP4 after I install windows 2000.
