z60m display "blanks" randomly on battery power

My z60m display periodically "blanks" for a second or two at seemingly random intervals. It looks like the backlight just turns off, as I can see the display very lightly when it happens. The display turns back on immediately but it renders the system unusable for any serious work.

This problem only occurs on battery power, and only since I ran the last set of updates. I suspect the culprit is either the BIOS, or one of the power management (power manager and power management driver) updates. I attempted to rollback the BIOS and their flahs progrma merely said "No update is required" and it forced me to cancel. Removing and reinstalling the power manager and the power management driver has not helped either.

This wouldn't be the first time I've had problems with a power management update. Last time, I ran the updater and it got rid of all but tow of the power management profiles, and refused to let me create new ones. Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't help then either, I finally got fed up and restored the system. I really don't want to restore my development and user environment again though.

Any help would be most appreciated.

I had this problem at one point on my T30. The biggest thing you can probably do is disable the "Graphic Device Power Management". On my computer it is just a matter of left-clicking the gauge, but I don't know how different your software is. If this doesn't work, get rid of your power management software completely and see if the regular windows driver still has the problem. If it doesn't, you should be able to install an older version of your software without issue. If you can, it might be useful to try a live or PE CD. These are OSs that run off the CD by loading themselves into the memory and don't touch the hard drive. If one of these has a problem, then it sound like a hardware issue to me, and you may want to check your battery.

I've confirmed it's not a hardware problem.
I've removed the IBM power management software, and booted other OSes including the predesktop area on the recovery partition with no problem. Their software is just so invasive I can't figure out which piece is being left behind. It's very frustrating.

Windows System Restore should roll back everything except the BIOS update. I would try that. I recommend using System Restore in Windows SAFE MODE.
